Beer general - why the fuck aren't you drinking edition? Moderate alcohol consumption reduces the risk of heart disease significantly and is linked to greater longevity.

Anyway, discuss your favorite beers and such.

I've just brewed a dunkelweizen, and it's (hopefully) carbonating in the bottles now. I had a bit of a fuckup when I added the extract (pleb), but it didn't case any harm to the beer I think. I've got my wort cooling time down significantly, and I think that's reflected in the lack of stray flavors in the final product. Hopefully I will become a steadier hand with five or so more batches under my belt, then I'll move onto outdoor completely grain brewing. I think I'll try a Kolsch next as the risk of infection is very low, I might even use it as a base for a springtime radler to please my friends.

I had about $20 in a stainless steel pot, a whisk, and a ladle. You also need a sanitizing solution, very cheap. First brew ingredients set me back $30 or $40. If you buy a fermentation chamber it'll be $10 to $50 depending on what you get. It can be done for sub $100 for the first time if you're brewing two gallons at a time. Worth trying I'd say, you can just cover the pot the first time it'll only get a little funky.

I'm thinking about what to brew next... maybe a malty red kolsch. I just made beers loosely in the style of two of my favourites - A Tripel and a half inspired by Maudite and a Cherry Stout ultimately brought about by getting the lads right dicked on Mackesons... getting pretty decent at it. If you want a recommendation for a good local beer from a local, try Altbier (literally 'old style beer') from Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. Füchsen Alt, Schlüssel Alt or Uerige will do.
