American grocery stores are so depressing compared to cultures that actually cook. The prices on rice and noodles are insane. And if you want spices...fucking forget it. The best you can expect is a tiny 3 oz. plastic bottle. Go into an Indian grocery store, and you can buy a pound of cumin for like a dollar or two. Go into a Chinese grocery store and get a 50 lb. bag of rice for $17. You can't even buy that much rice at an American grocery store. The best you can probably do is 10 lbs. and you're looking at $1/lb on a regular day. You want some bones to make a soup at Walmart or Kroger? Hah! They only carry packaged meats. Those "butchers" are the same warehouse employees but wearing white coats. Ramen? Maruchan and Nissin. If you're lucky, they might carry Nongshim or Ottogi, but don't count on it. A small bottle of soy sauce is like $4. The same money would buy you 1.5 liters at a Chinese grocery store. And the brands are the worst part. You've got a few national brands who take up the whole fucking store. Reese's, Hershey's, Lay's, Coca Cola Co., Kellog, Stouffer's, etc. and all of that shit is owned by ConAgra, most likely.

the price per lb when buying a big sack or a kilo of rice is barely different

I've seen those large packages of Indian spices OP is talking about, and the Hindi labels had this line in English "Not for Human Consumption".

The spices are cheap because they're grown in human shit, processed in human shit, packaged in human shit, to cover the taste of rotting slop food that's also contaminated with human shit... so obviously since the "spices" won't pass inspection in the USA as a "food" have to have that bit on the label.

where are you shopping?
3 oz. plastic bottles means you're shopping in retarded places.
And no you can't get a 50 lb. bag of rice at a grocery store, no individual buyer needs rice for that many people, but a 10 lb. bag isn't anywhere close to $1/lb.

Reese's is the name of a candy made by Hershey

Lay's and Coca Cola are both owned by PepsiCo

Kellogg is it's own separate company

Stouffer's is a Nestle brand

Stop talking, you'll look smarter
