They no longer exist, but we had Hot N Now here in Michigan, they were some other places too but just barely

Nobody ate their, me and my dad would go there because there would be no line whatsoever

The food was dirt cheap, cheaper than McDonalds, used to get cheeseburgers and popcorn chicken, I miss it

Hot n now used to be really good in the 90s then went to shit around 2002 or so when the chain basicall dissolved and continuously got worse, one of the last remaining ones was in my hometown until they had a fire and rebranded as burger 81. You really couldnt beat hot n now for value in thier prime and the food was really good. They had the best spicy popcorn chicken ive ever had and i miss their shakes.

Lee's Deli is a pay by pound chinese place. Only exists in San Francisco, but it has like 10 locations there. There are two within walking distance of my offices.

They're not particularly good nor particularly cheap. I only really go into them to get these giant rice krispies treats with the bottoms dipped in chocolate, and I only do that on my way home on pay day.

Anyone else been to these places? Being inside them is kind of surreal for some reason.

My local burger dive, Hamburger Express, got replaced with one of these after it burned down in a grease fire. I had been to other Fantastics before, but this new one was just horrible. Had absolutely no atmosphere, just bright lights and metal chairs, where the Express had only natural lighting and huge cushion booths.
As for the food, it's grown on me. I like the seasoning they put on their fries, but the chicken tenders are always inconsistent, both in what brand they are and how burnt they are. I only order to go.

My dad used to take me here when I got to visit him, we'd drive up and sit in the car with fuckhuge mugs of root beer and eat as many spanish dogs as we could.
He tried for so long to make that spanish dog sauce at home, but sadly he died before he could get the recipe down. But I have discovered the recipe via a simple google search and sometimes I make it and have some root beer in his honor.

I concur with the comments in that recipe post. Mexene isn't just chili powder; it's oregano, cumin and garlic all combined with the chili powder.
