Hello /ck/

I need a new frying pan.
I want something decent, about 30cm with a thick base. No idea what composition to go for etc.
If anyone has recommendations I would really appreciate it.
Budget is around £30.
Hoping to find something on Amazon UK.
Mainly for bacon, steak and eggs.

If anyone else is looking for advice on buying cookware and want to jump into the thread to ask for help, be my guest.

Thanks.

Get a cast iron pan. they usually go for 15 - 20 freedom bucks

Not OP, but are cast iron pans prone to having things like eggs stick to them easily?

Once they're seasoned well and you learn how to cook in it, not at all.

I do scrambled, sunny-side up, over easy etc. no problems

Not if you season it and care for it properly.

they'll stick for a few times until they build a non stick seasoning.
It's better to season your pan once you buy it and it will never stick

Is there anything in particular to look out for, such as things to avoid or are they all pretty much the same?
I'll look into seasoning. Is that affected by anything like using a dishwasher etc.
Do I have to be careful of rust at all if it's damp overnight?

Nah Cast iron pans are the same.

Never cast iron pans in the dishwasher nor in soap.

it will rust, dry thoroughly on the stove top on medium heat it'll probably take a minute then apply a thin coat of oil to prevent rust.

It sounds like a lot of work, but trust me, once you get the hang of it. a well maintained cast iron pan will last beyond your great grandkids.

if you're lazy though, they're not for you since they require a modicum of care

I am a big proponent of cast iron and I have to say yes, you can make eggs in a very well seasoned and well oiled CI pan but they are not ideal. They are too heavy with too much thermal mass and respind too slowly to heat changes. It takes some experience to get eggs right in them if you have to. Nothing wwrong with making eggs in a cheap non.stick

Detergent is fine. Old-school lye soaps were the problem but we don't use those anymore. Even Lodge mentions on their website you can use detergent if you want.

Carbon steel can be good for this. Much quicker to react, though not as good for steaks.
