Believe it or not there was a time when chemical-sounding food names were considered hygienic sounding and "scientific". This was before the federal government stepped in to protect consumers with the Food and Drug Act. Protecting yourself meant slathering everything in antiseptics and fumigating your home with poison gas. Because as bad as that was, it was still better than the alternative.
