I haven't heard about the 5-second rule before I saw the Mythbuster show.
I depends what I drop on my floor, if it's some $20 steak, I might be inclined to pick it up and put it on the pan, thinking the heat will kill whatever bacterias it might contain.
Some other stuff, I throw out.
Hey, I'm still here, hardly never get sick.
You?

My concern isn't germs, but hair or dirt.

My floor is so clean I'd eat from there no second thought.

I like what Julia Child said when she dropped a raw duck or turkey on the floor on live TV. Basically, "just wash it off, nobody will know". Besides, all the heat during cooking will kill any nasties anyway.

So rinse it and then pop it on the pan. The heat will kill the bacteria and dry it off.
