I buy almost all the meat 4 people eat for three weeks to a month, staples like rice, beans, canned veggies, seasonings that i'm out of and pastas and things, gallon jugs of water and like 2 twelve-packs of sodas and enough vegetables for about 3-6 days depending on what they are.
the rest of the next three weeks to a month i only go to the grocery store for vegetables and stuff that we run out of mid-way through.
all the meats go into the freezer. if i buy two 3lb packages of ground meat, i get out my scale and portion it out to 1 lb and wrap it and freeze it too, so that it's easy to take out a couple days before i need it.
people who shop like this aren't necessarily eating that way all the time, because i've definitely been embarrassed of my shopping trip for special occasions before.

And I have seen with my own eyes several 65-80 year olds who subsist on nothing but junk food cookies, tv dinners, yogurt, and diet coke. It's funny because when you ask them about it, they all say it's not fair to the young.
