I’d qualify the “unnecessary “. Unnecessary unless a great physical task has just been accomplished, in which case bacon should be added along with a gallon of beer. I helped someone move and I never really got it until then. It was almost required to repair my broken body. I’ve never had it since, but since that day I reserve judgement.

How is it a waste of time when you can cook it alongside the patty and the egg is done faster?
I like egg on burger but I prefer the yolk to be broken(just cut it with the spatula) otherwise it's a bit too messy.

No-one will hold it against you if you choose not to put an egg on your burger but your burger will be better with an over easy egg. Over hard is wrong because the yolk is the whole point. That it is messy isn't a point against it because a good burger will be dripping sauce anyway.

I tried it a couple times and while I understand why it's done (steak and eggs) I just prefer my burger without egg on it entirely. Especially runny yolk, I fucking love runny yolk but I ain't dealing with the mess as I lift it off the plate and get it all over my hands and clothes.
