I've never felt that was true. I've had sticker shock though once or twice. But, if you cook and shop, you'll know what really adds up. They're quite an ordinary price for food by the pound, after you start calculating. When you walk over and see non sale items, like raw chicken breast at $5.99/lb (where you get 3 for like $11, or you can get it cooked as a rotisserie for like $8 for the whole bird), but it's already cooked for you... I'm going to say that if you run up the bill at hot bars, then you are pouring on dressing or not that careful, in general. Putting big pieces of watermelon is not as good a bargain as more expensive nuts instead.
Go to any buffet restaurant and pay like $12 or more for a plate of food. What is nice is the luxury of having different textures, moods and nutritional sources all at once with no ingredient leftovers of this or that in your fridge if you had made it yourself.

Since I'm aware that untended food can be contaminated by poor temps, people with filthy hands on tongs tossed about, and so forth, I don't often eat from them. But, when I do I have enjoyed the variety. It's nice to get one or two bites of something like ethiopian peanut pumpkin beef, some shit like that i'd never make, along with my salad.

BETTER DEAL is when groceries give you a pick a main, pick 2 sides kind of meal deal at the hot area. Publix is great like this. It's clearly 2 meals of food packed into a container, and excellent smoked meat of the day, chicken fingers or other special of the day.

They are at my grocery store.

At winco everything is like $3 or $4 a pound. Pretty good value when you're a lard ass too lazy to cook. Other grocery stores I've seen a simple pasta dish go for $8 a pound

I googled the pic and it was whole foods, I never knew about this place. Saw a couple vids, so much food.

Be careful about those buffets, the Korean ones especially ones on the west side of manattan which sucks already. There was a story about some homeless guy putting his piss into the buffet trays. He finally got caught.
Seriously, be vary wary about those places in NYC.
