there's so much repetition involved in it even if you couldn't cook you'd figure it out by rote soon enough.
if you don't smoke pretend to so you can take your breaks

Bring your ego and pretend you know more than everyone. Arrogance is king in cooking and working new jobs in general. Fake it til you make it

The first day is the biggest and when most opinions are made. There is a definite pecking order in these places. They are going to test you on the first day and you have to be ready. You don’t want to be anyone’s bitch that is for sure. You need to find the biggest guy in there and punch him straight in his nose. Show your dominance. Than ask does anyone want any. I didn’t think so.

This works but some jobs make you replace the guy you punched so don't knock out the janitor or you'll be cleaning toilets. Yuck!

I used to work at a hotel. We had a nice restaurant, but I worked at the front desk. I always pitied the guys in the kitchen. They had to cook for the restaurant and every emoloyee also got a free meal for lunch. I wouldn't bother them on my lunch break if they were busy and didn't even think about it when we had wedding parties in house but most people didn't give a fuck. The hotel unions are surprisingly strong in my city since tourism is such a big part of the economy. They had to cook for nearly 300 employees alone everyday, nevermind patrons of the restaurant, and the illegal Mexican housekeepers/groundskeepers would bitch if they didn't like the food or they felt like the portions werent large enough. They would complain to the union reps, who would complain to the union, who would threaten the resort. When the illiterate illegal immigrant who didn't speak English said salto the kitchen staff had to ask how high. Alcoholism was pervasive in that kitchen and the executive chef was always in a bad mood.

I started as a bellboy and it was one of my first real jobs. Within a few years I was a front desk manager, which isn't a prestigious title to be sure but it still amused me to have people working under me that I was making more money than who were paying off student loans for their hospitality degree. I got out of the hospitality industry a couple of years ago and I'm never looking back. It is a tough grind and nadee hate people in general.

Anyway sorry I don't have more input about the restaurant side but that's my two cents on hotels.
