Back when my house was infested with deer mice I would catch them and put them in one of those cheap habitrails.
I fed them dehydrated fruit and they became tremendously fat.
Eventually my cat wrecked the absolute fuck out of the habitrail while I was at work.
No idea if she ate the mice or if they were able to waddle away.

Mouses and rats are very context-dependent animals.
If someone has a pet rat I'll play with it and think it's the best thing I've had happen to me all month.
But if I walked into the bathroom one morning and found that very same ratto in the sink I'd kill it with no hesitation and no regret.

I don't think it's like that with something like a kittycat, for example.

my best friend is a vegan, albeit the only one i've ever met who does it purely because he doesn't want animals to die while fully admitting he wished he could eat cheese and steak and all the good stuff i eat, for which i kind of respect him, cos of the honesty. his gf is also a vegan of the same depressed self-denying type.

their old flat was a bit disgusting. one day my friend comes home to his mrs having cooked dinner for them both. he was always a nazi about cleaning the oven, she didn't care. there was smoke coming out of it, she's cooked a vegan pizza or something. he shouts at her for not cleaning the oven, because that's clearly why it was smoking. only on opening the oven to get his dinner out, he find a dead rat at the bottom that's somehow got in. it's burnt to fuck and stuck to the bottom of the oven. her strangely smokey dinner has been flavoured with baked rat. my friend bins his dinner and spends the evening scraping baked rat carcass off the bottom of the oven. his mrs spends the evening gagging and feeling sick cos she's broken vegan edge eating smoked rat pizza.

I went through that before. I have a snake so I have to feed him mice. One mouse was very special; she wouldn't shake, would actually look at you and chill with you, so I had to keep her as a pet. She ended up getting out of her cage and I assume she got out of the house since I never found her after that.
