Caught me off guard too but sweets often go very nicely with pork. Chocolate sauce with porkchops too.

Do they not put fresh sliced Turkey in with the ham where your from? Turkey is required for a proper monte cristo.

The jam is a unique touch and probably quite good, but powdered sugar is a symptom of amerilarditis which you should nip in the bud before you hurt yourself.

>> No.11903528

No matter how many times I try it, I just don't get it. You're adding a sugary sauce to a sugary meat. It seems like you should be using a different meat for the core.

>Lawler Sandwich; it is made of a fried egg (broken yolk), bread, cheese, mayonnaise, and jam (typically raspberry).
Never really heard anyone use this name for it but if you like the Monte Cristo you might like this too

Sounds delicious, I'll have to give it a go. I'll probably lightly steam two eggs in a small round so none of the yolk is cooked but I get lots of egg.
>Never really heard anyone use this name for it but
That's probably because no one likes attorneys.

>>11902396
Really it's not THAT decadent. If you go with the pan fried option, the egg and milk adds only 100 calories, the jam is probably under 100 calories as well.

Damn good sammich for sure

I had Monte Cristo once in my life when I was 8 years old or so with my brother at Bennigan's. It was fucking disgusting, but I ate it anyway. We both ended up throwing up all over the hotel bathroom floor the night. diarrhea too

It is basically an after day thanksgiving sandwich. The added powder sugar and that it is normally a hot sandwich makes it pretty good

I like the croque madame. Get rid of the seet stuff, add dijon mustard and a fried egg

>> No.11909831

I do occasionally make myself a Monte Christo if I happen to have all the ingredients on hand. I eat neither jam nor powdered sugaar with it though. Both slices of bread covered with mustard, ham and bacon, fold the sandwich together, dip in well whisked egg, then fry in a pan. Eat with more mustard and/or mayo and/or ketchup.

Hrm, not quite right.

It's a club sandwich, served cut crosswise typically, So, it's a ham and cheddar, another piece of bread, then turkey and swiss, and the bread is battered as french toast, which isn't only egg, but also dairy to get the custardy goodness in the bread. Is it deep fried or griddled? It's more griddled, though Bennigans did almost beer batter it.
Powdered sugar on top, such as you do with french toast. No syrup though, just chunky raspberry jam, which enhances the turkey mostly, kind of the way cranberries do their thing. Because of the hint of mustard and sharp swiss, the raspberry thing goes as a nice contrast.

Generally speaking they are pan-fried, not deep-fried. OP's is clearly pan-fried. Bennigans was the only place that deep-fried them, which I suspect was out of laziness. Pan fried is much more common, and much better IMO.
