cats are absolutely horrible at controlling rodent populations. You're better off with minks or ferrets since they can actually get into their nests. Even then you'd use a dog for waiting outside and chasing down the escaped ones. You can't discipline a cat for that sort of thing they get bored too easy. Alternatively you could use the peanut butter roller method and catch like 20-30 every night with no animals to feed or attention required besides rebaiting the traps

I've had mice in 3 separate houses. I got a cat after the last infestation and haven't had a problem since.

Prior to the cat I set sticky traps, snap traps, and cage traps everywhere I found poop. I never once caught a mouse.
