which country makes the best whiskey?

>> No.11854627

kind of a dumb question given how much variation each types of whisky have. there's obviously a quality curve in all these producing areas.

I don't think there's a "best style", but I feel Scotland makes the best whisky because it has the most independent distilleries by magnitudes. With US, Japanese, and especially Irish whiskey, it's all just owned by a handful of corporations, that, in my humble opinion, don't care about quality as much.

There's a lot of independent US whiskey makers making really good stuff but yeah they do tend to get bought up once they make it...a lot of it depends on where you live in the country.

It is too bad that a lot of the flagship "entry-level" Irish whiskeys were originally single pot stills or single malts or whatever but are now blends with grain whiskey in there.

Real pot still style Irish whiskey is fucking great. But nearly every entry-level product from Ireland has filler whiskey in it. So I understand what you mean when you say that Irish whiskey has issues with quality.

Is the brand loyalty people have for Jameson, Bushmills, Tullamore Dew, all the others, strong enough to withstand these products going back to their original form, now that Irish whiskey is making a comeback and the Irish economy isn't in as rough shape as it was before?

>> No.11858417

>>11858362
I was reading about this just now because I don't know a lot about realized that it is ironic that this is how things turned out; I guess Scottish distillers were the ones who started making blended whiskey with column distilled filler rather than the Irish, even though an Irishman invented the twin columns still

definitely not scotch. it's got a much higher floor before you get in to decent whisky. bourbon and other american whiskey has a much lower entry level before you get to the good stuff. i occasionally drink and enjoy scotch, but the ceiling on it is too damn high for me to really get in to it. i could realistically buy myself a bottle of weller or ol' pappy, but scotch of the same level is a down payment on a large house.
