Interesting POV. What group of meat eaters would you say falls under that category?

Maybe limit it to people who only do X amount of exercise per week? But then you run into issues of how that relates to the average person, who doesn't exercise at all.

Does it matter?
There is no doubt the average westerner consumes an unhealthy amount of meat. The problem is that advocating a no-meat diet is reactionary and counterproductive to promoting a LOW meat diet.

As far as environmental harm goes the same thing is true. Maintaining agricultural balance reduces the use of chemical pesticides, fertilizers, drugs for livestock, and so on. A small number of animals raised in conjunction with a large amount of crops is far more enviornmentally friendly than nothing but farming crops because it can operate in a closed loop. The animals feed on the farm scraps. The animals waste fertilizes the farm. It solves problems of waste disposal and the need for fertilizers. If done on a small enough scale then further improvements are possible. For example, a vegetable farmer can keep chickens. the chickens eat bugs off the veggie plants and in turn provide eggs and meat. It's a win-win situation, provided the balance is maintained. Small amounts of meat, large amounts of crops.

Of course it matters.

If person A and B both pay attention to their nutrition and health, but one is vegetarian and lives longer than the meat eater (or vice versa) then that is very important.
>There is no doubt the average westerner consumes an unhealthy amount of meat.
I don't think that's true at all. The problem is the quality of meat and how we're cooking it. If you look at obesity statistics, the obesity rate has tripled since the 1970s while meat consumption has stayed essentially the same (up 19.19kcal, or about a half oz of chicken thighs). The major culprit has been the saturation of fast food, deep frying, etc

I agree with the sustainability, but as the deleterious effects likely won't be seen until after my death and I likely won't have any children, that isn't a moving argument for me.

That's why I'm doing a mediterranean diet so I can live as much as possible. Being a vegan isn't that important though, most centenarians I've researched weren't vegans. It's very well established that fibre is good for you and vegetables are good for you. That could explain some of the difference.

While less certain, the overall evidence points to saturated fat being bad for you and monounsaturated being good for you. If this is true it would explain why pescotarians live the longest and lacto-ovo vegetarians the shortest.

Finally no study is actually cited so it's possible this image is just made up.

There could also be some other reason such as >>11751714 but I'm not inclined to jump to this conclusion (how long would it have taken to establish that smoking causes cancer if we never took any observational study at face value?).

>> No.11755077

No. These studies tend to just show that vegetarians are more health conscious and that's behind their higher life expectancy. If they were to incorporate some meat into their diet, it would have no ill effect. A balanced diet that includes meat is healthy.

You're either a vegetarian or you're not. If you eat any kind of meat you're not a vegetarian, you're not a "semi-vegitarian" or "pesco-vegetarian".

No, meat is not bad for you. Maybe the shit quality food at fast food chains is bad for you but it's not just the meat in those cases but also the incredibly disgusting vegetables that can barely be called food. Meat is good for you because it contains almost every vitamin you need and it is very easy for the body to process.
