11750508 No.11750508 [Reply] [Original]

“Please do not buy battery eggs. It’s not a good thing... 98% of people can afford free range eggs.”

I won’t lie, I could save less or cut corners elsewhere and buy free range eggs. But I don’t.
I grew up working on weekends and public holidays for $2 an hour, even being driven by an employer an hour+ to shovel shit out of the cages of these birds to be used as fertiliser on his tomato farm.

What I remember is that they were well fed and did fuck all (admittedly not by choice) everyday except eat, drink and shit. Were the conditions horrible? Well the plague proportions of mice and rats living in their shit below their cages thought it was fucking sweet.
I for one don’t feel guilty about it eating the produce of their labour. The government you pay your taxes to don’t, either. But they will happily take the extra taxes you pay for buying free range eggs.
I can honestly say after seeing them first hand, the chickens didn’t seem to give a shit either way. The difference between them and the ‘free range’ chickens I had at home is that the ones in cages don’t get to go ‘roost’ at night, aka sleep off the ground.
Literally 0% of caged chickens ever go on a hunger strike. Same as the mice and rats who live in their shit below their cages. Actually, they find it so appealing they fuck all day breeding more and more.
If mice like those conditions so much they choose to live there, who is to say the chickens wouldn’t choose that life over living outside being hunted as food by most anything, when their option is to be caged up, safe, with an unlimited supply of food and drink. I mean isn’t this the life of most humans but we have to leave one cage for another most every day to work for our food and drink.

While I'm not going to say I agree nor disagree with you I just want to say that bringing up mice and rats is fairly irrelevant to your point. That's like saying "yeah keeping children in sewers is fine all the cockroaches i see are enjoying themselves so what's the difference?" (on a less hyperbolic level obviously). The mice and rats aren't chickens, and it's fairly common knowledge that mice and rats are scavengers by nature. They'll naturally thrive in filth and any environment where anything edible is plentiful. Am I saying chickens won't live in similar conditions? I wouldn't know, but I'm just saying you're forcing a coincidence as a correlation which just makes for an awkward argument.

I use to have a chicken as a pet
they do have feelings and get exited when you pet them
my aunt had a farm
I got overly attached to one and then one time when I was eating chicken my aunt said it was the chicken I was attached to
I cried, but man it was delicious
Point being, animals have feelings, just dont get attached to the popular edible ones

I too had chicks as oets growing up. I was 7 or 8 at the time. To this day (28 now) I remember this very well.
My mother bought them as babies (all boys) as they would have been killed I guess.
I was young so I loved letting them out of their cage every day and take them around our garden looking for worms.
They thought I was their mum and as pathetic as it sounds I enjoyed it, taking them out daily after school and feeding them, and I tell you, they loved me and I loved them... part two incoming...

I believe some animals have the capacity to feel affection, mostly mammals but some birds do exhibit this as well, like parrots and crows. The chicken is probably the least capable and stupidest animals seeing as how they have been bred for consumption.
Still, they're cute and I like to think that to some degree, no matter how small, they can still feel. Obviously not emotion on the same level we can, but something familiar of fear and pleasure.

this is a tipical problem people face when they think how to behave ethically in life (most people don't really think about it today)

the thing is, buying free range eggs is hypocrital and useless, because the world is shit and there are million other things i could/should do to try and solve the problems it has. not only that, but wether i actually do it or not is completely irrelevant since i'm just a droplet in an ocean of people buying battery eggs (or whatever the real world problem/injustice is) so it doesn't really matter whatever i do. there is also another argument, like, if i really cared about those chikens i should do some activism or something. i mean they are billions of them living not just like cattle, but in torture. same as if you really cared for children in africa, you wouldn't donate 20$ a month, you would sell everything you have for them, and go help them build hospitals or whatever. these people are dieing. or don't donate blood (woah you might have saved a life with that great job bud), the ethical choice is to kill yourself and donate your organs, saving many. or at least, donate one kidney, you don't even die this way. shouldn't you do this?

>> No.11751004

>>11750998
so one might say here fuck it, and just forget about it and conveniently buy the cheapest thing in the market and that requires less work on my part (in the eu, you have to look at the number printed on the egg and that tells you in what conditions it was raised). so VERY CONVENIENTLY for myself, the most ethical choice, is also the one that requires me to expend less money and time in my daily life to implement it. here is where, if you are not a selfish self-centered asshole incapable of self-reflection raised in the dystopian nightmare that we live in, you would suspect that you might in fact not be biased and examine what you are doing, and recognize that the only way you can help solve this type of problems is to not be a part of them, and that means taking the time to look at the fucking number in the egg every day at the supermarket and paying that extra 50cents or whatever, and giving 50c every day at the tramp outside, and not buying products made by little slave kids in taiwan, and supporting your local community. and this is a fuckton of efford, time and money, and i think this is why sloth (laziness) was considered one of the worst sins

because if you do the right things, it doesn't really change anything, you are just a droplet in the ocean, but the ocean is made out of droplets. the only way to change the ocean is to change the fucking droplets in it (putting bombs and so on doesn't really work on top of other problems). so change yourself, and spread the message somewhat, and that's how the problems get solved, or at least that's how you are a good person

Alright OP that's your opinion. Mine is different.

I buy free range eggs for two reasons. One is because I eat the yolks raw and the free range eggs are healthier for me.

Two is because I'll pay double or so, if I'm paying for the chickens to have a better life, a cozy outdoor life. Same goes for the grass fed cows I pay for.

To say free rang is healthier suggests the embryo would then grow into a healthier chick or at the very least, the embryo of the cages chickens egg would grow to be deformed or die before breaking out of its egg.
If that happens I believe you.
I hope that doesn’t happen.
Fuck, that doesn’t happen, does it?

I buy a box of 12 large free range eggs from the corner shop for £2 that are often covered in shit.

When I buy the caged hens eggs from Tesco they are horrible when cooked.

The problem is egg producers will claim to treat chickens well but there's been cases of them being mistreated and living in filth. You really can't trust anyone.

Just find some eggs you like and thats it.

The caged eggs from tesco taste no different to the eggs iv eaten from the chickens my dad keeps on his allotment, in fact the caged eggs are often more consistent since their diet isnt contantly fluctuating. Youre talking out of your arse, if i blindfolded you and fed you a caged egg vs free range you would never know the difference, youre just one of those people who likes to pretend theyre getting a better product by paying more, much like people who claim supermarket meat tastes any different to the meat from the butchers, butchers may be fresher, but in every other way there is no discernible difference, again a blindfolded test would prove it. If so called wine experts cant even tell the difference between wines when blindfolded a bunch everyday gimps certainly wont be able to tell the difference between eggs / meat.

>oh fuck dumb ass little girl you just stepped on my leg

I was <10 at the time and the poor little guy was <2weeks old when he had a massively broken leg. Fuck I was mad at my little sister but she was <5. I didn’t know about splints at the time and my mother didn’t teach me nor care enough. Poor little guy hobbled around in pain, but I fed him the most and carried him as much as possible.i loved him the most. I tried to take him to my room to sleep and heal but my mother said no. Did it anyway and got the strap from dad. Did it for 3 days in a row, until they stopped bc of the bruises but let me go out every night to say goodnight to him and see he’s ok.
They got big and ugly and smelly fast so the feeding them as if I was their mom died off after a few months. God it was a fun experience though and damn they are cute as chicks.
I recall having to de-feather them after killing them. I didn’t cry bc we were poor and protein. It was weird thinking how I should feel bad but I didn’t.
Then I ate a leg and there was this huge spherical bulge in the middle of the drumstick where the bone had somehow grown over and healed.
Fuck me if that isn’t the most I ever cried.
I didn’t eat chicken after that until I was about 12 when my mother tricked me about what it was and I said it was great.
