11747615 No.11747615 [Reply] [Original]

So I've been trying to learn to use chopsticks in the proper way, but I can't for the life of me get it down right. It seems if I don't steady the bottom chopstick with my ring finger, it just ends up either sliding up my finger, or it's too far back and I can't pinch anything with the top chopstick, so the top one just slides past it. I'm not really sure where I could be going wrong. Anybody have any advice?

I don't want to be laughed at by asians :(

>> No.11747622

thats pretty cool op. have you made any progress? im gay btw, not sure if that matters.

>> No.11747623

It's a mechanical process, so just keep trying to do it correctly and eventually the repetition and practice will click something in your brain.

Sorry, I meant the pad of my ring finger, rather than on the fingernail or somewhere near it. Can't make them meet since I can't get the top stick close enough.

Just takes a little practice. If youre getting cramps and the tips are crossing youre holding them too hard. Copsticks are used pretty gently. If something is slipping youre probably picking it up right. Half of how chop sticks are used is sort of like a shovel with where the points meet like a v then balancing the food. Asians are shy about poking food with them but are by no means strangers to it and will do it and try to hide it. Seen my Thai aunt stick the bottom stick in then grab it with the top to play it off as normal on several occasions.

I don't give a fuck, they work great for me... seeing OP's pic, i realized, i only use index finger and thumb to hold the first stick, while the other one is resting on the middle finger...

Look at step 6. That's what you're supposed to do. Use your thumb to press down on the bottom chop where it crosses over the top (between the vee and the ring finger), that will provide enough pressure to keep it from moving. Your middle finger does all the work of moving the top chop around while the bottom chop just lays there like a bitch,

I don't know if it helps, but my relatives have commented that I hold my chopsticks closer to the bottom. I can use them normally, but I think holding them slightly lower lets for better control. Then you can move higher.

>> No.11751732

>>11751678
means you're exerting too much force on the chopsticks to hold them in place. you can either use your 4th finger to push against the anchor to stabilize it or exert pressure from the base of your thumb to anchor it. if your cramping your're putting too much force, let it balance between the base of your thumb and the finger tip of your 4th. only the 2nd and 3third finger act as the hinge to move. the anchor chopstick should never move.

I learned by eating popcorn with chopsticks, they're easy to pick up due to shape and texture so you dont get frustrated, but still make you get the technique down pat in short order. Silly, but less silly than eating popcorn with a fork or spoon.

That shit doesn't work, you should arc your middle finger and press the bottom stick against it (yellow circles = pressure), and hold the top one with just thumb and index.
