I'd like recommendations for other bottles to try. Trying to stay under $30 for 750ml. I like bourbon but scotch whiskey is also good.

traditional whiskies are distilled from various types of grains and then aged in oak casks. you can by some unaged whiskies now to see what it tastes like right off the still, but those are usually not interesting unless you're a distiller.
canadian whiskey is usually made from rye. tennessee whiskey is slightly different from bourbon. it has to go through charcoal filtration and be from tennessee. george dickel is a better example than jack daniels.

I'm Tennessee-raised and a recent Virginia transplant. Nothing government-related in Virginia is reasonably priced

Restaurant tax. Tolls/EZpass. License, registration, inspection, and vehicle property tax. Petty traffic police. And Richmond roads are still shit and will destroy your tires and suspension. And the $600k houses in historic downtown look like shit and will set you back $3,000 per month. It's the most pretentious city you can imagine. In the true sense of the word.
