The tinned beans are mass manufactured, for some reason sugar is added. The proper baked beans had molasses added along with some bacon and cooked quite slowly. You can't compare tinned baked beans with the original. Make your own, try a tin (400g) haricot beans with a tin (400g) chopped tomatoes and some paprika, cook together till it's thickened.

Because Boston baked beans have always had sugar or some other sweetener, but when Heinz baked beans became a popular export to butter tooths they dropped the brown sugar. So your beans are just a poverty version.

If you want something similar try Van Camp's pork and beans. It's pretty much just tomato sauce and pork lard, not sure if there's any added sugar and if there is it's not much.
