I've been eating lunch at the same restaurant for over 10 years. Imagine when the not so regular drunk customer who comes in with his obnoxious wife every once in a while starts talking to you on a first name basis because they have known your father like 20 years ago.
That shit is so awkward and infuriating, especially whenever they show up they are allready drunk. I have been so fucking close to actually saying it to his face that I really dislike he talks to me like a family member even when he is someone I barely recognize and doesn't even fill the quota of a regular.
Drunk customers are the fucking worst, they are filled with this borderline aggressive mania where everything they say is to be treated as the best joke ever, even if there isn't a trace amount of joke in anything they say. Those situations are always volatile, because a single bad look can turn the whole situation on it's head and they get super mad.

When I shared an apartment with a buddy of mine there was a Chinese restaurant in our neighborhood and the lady who ran it is destined to be an awesome old Chinese grandma some day. If she saw us through the window she'd have our beers ready by the time we got inside and sat down. And she was always using us as a focus group for new dishes. We'd be halfway through our meal and she'd come out of the kitchen with another plate of food.

I used to frequent a Pizza Hut due to my hours being all fucked up and the chow hall being closed near my barracks. The staff knew me by sight and were alwats nice for pleasant conversations, and the regional manager tossed me a couple of the hot bags when they replaced the ones they had. Things are damn useful.

I could never accept that, I feel like there would be some undue pressure to continue going there together, and it also sets an expectation that everytime I come with my gf or by myself I should 'get' something. I'm talking from the owners perspective now, having managed high quality restaurants myself. The only time I've given something nice for free is maybe a small mixed drink on an anniversary or birthday or an intermezzo between courses. Desserts never being free on birthdays, of course. this so fucking much. I wonder if there is some kind of niche in the market for barbers that just cut your hair in a neutral and quick way with no smalltalk. No stupid fashion hairdo shit, no minicans of hair styler gel they try to sell, just cut and pay.
luckily I went bald quickly and can now just trim the remainder of my hair at home at my own convience

Yeah, I do this literally all the time. If I recognize you and know you treat the FoH staff I work with well I'll make you a little preview dish, let you taste one of the projects I have going (smoked, cured duck ham, bacon, cool ferments/pickles if I know you're into that sort of thing). It's always valuable to give people a taste of things, I usually don't ask for an opinion/critique, I'll just casually observe from the pass while I work and ask the waitress if they had any thoughts after.
