But how do I drink what I want if I don't know what I want? My alcohol consumption experience is almost 100% vodka because it's the least shitty thing the average college student has available. There could be drinks out there that I'd love that I've never even heard of.

Tell us some foods you like to eat and we can make better educated recommendations.
If you like coffee, you'll probably enjoy a stout beer. If you like the taste of smoke, give the scotch whisky threads a try.
Personally I like rum, and even Bacardi is fine for that category.

I like salty stuff more than sweet stuff for the most part.
For drinks I like water, tea, whole milk, and sometimes soda.

>it's the least shitty thing the average college student has available.
no, it's not.
buy 50mL bottles of spirits and 'some' liquors until you find the kind you like, and the brand as well. you could always buy the most expensive 50mL (shots) you can at any number of liquor stores you have access to until you realize what type you like most and then narrow it down by brand that way.

if you're looking for liquors (pronounced - likoors, not alcohol in general - brands include Fireball, Chambord, Bailey's, Jagermeister, so on...) try the same thing. don't drink liquors by themselves, because people who do typically have a drinking problem.

find the "Periodic Table of Beers" online and hit up the beer threads on here and you're bound to find plenty of chatty fuckers more than willing to break down beer for you as much as i'm breaking this all down for you now. look for a place that sells singles and try to get singles of your major domestics and imports, then see what you like best. if you can handle beer then move onto the craft stuff and really start to understand what you like. they have everything.

the kind of wine you buy is named after the grapes used, unless it's a fruit wine, or mead, sake, absinthe (debated to be a wine), and then find out if you like sweet stuff, dry stuff, really fruity, cold, bubbly, warm. (look up wine charts as well) wine is a lot harder to get into than the rest I say because finding affordable and worthwhile wine requires you to spend a fair amount of money in a business that doens't usually stock decent wines in 50mL bottles.

don't ever feel like you have to buy something when you walk into a liquor store. you aren't obligated to make a purchase. always have your ID ready and never complain about being asked for it. don't be shady in the liquor store. if you have questions, ask someone. if the clerk doens't want to get involved, you're on your own and you should try another day with another clerk.

you want to just drink, of course - find out what it takes to get you piss-the-bed, shit-the-bed, vomiting drunk. this can take a few tries. you'll think you're going to die, not gonna happen. and the chances of you choking on your own vomit is highly improbable unless you're black-out, unconscious, slow pulse, and unable to come to the human instinctive that tells you you're about to die from something like not being able to breath.... you'll probably just get tired and pass out on your bed with your eyes closed and the world spinning. we've all been there.
>don't make it an effort to get that drunk... just see what it takes and enjoy the ride. you'll never know until then what your limits are
and my personal fatherly recommendation as naught but a 23 year old? buy a small bottle of Everclear, or any grain alcohol that's 95% ABV (190 proof). learn to respect the bottle and it will respect you as well.
>the shit will literally kill you if it doesn't literally blind you, so don't be fucking retarded. do drink it straight though, no pussy footin' around
mixed drinks? if you want to be a well-rounded, seemingly interesting and cultural man who gets pussy and cares about the world around him then buy a fucking cocktail book. for about $35 you can buy everything you'll ever need to make just about any reasonable mixed drink that could impress just about anyone. don't skimp on the materials though, like plastic is a piece of shit for a boston shaker compared to a plastic one. brand name soda is better with cheap whisky than expensive whisky is with cheap coke. throw in a cherry and a touch of lime to your rum and coke in a short ball glass and you have a certified panty dropper that didn't take a no-AC house party and herpes to figure out.
>you'll know when to buy a flask, don't be that guy.
try and make an effort to learn your fucking glassware and general terminology. anyone who knows anything about alcohol hates talking to someone who doesn't care.

50mL - Shots/Little bottles
100mL - Quarter-Pint/100mil
200mL - Half-Pint/200mil
375mL - Pint
750mL - Fifth
1L - Liter (few things come in this size)
1.75L - Half gallon/handle

Call it these names when you get to the store and you're asking about their smaller bottles behind the counter at check out. Small bottles start at pints and are kept behind the counter because they're the easiest to steal, obviously.

Never let your beer go from warm, to cold, and warm again or you'll skunk it - you won't have the same beer after you've gotten it cold and let it get warm. Skunking can happen that way, or if the bottle is clear instead of brown - to keep the sunlight away from causing the yeast to react. Open a bottle of Corona and you'll know what 'skunk' really means.

I should also mention that learning all the different ways to say "Cheers" in some of the major languages you can think of would be cool. Like, if you're about to clink your shot glass of warm sake before you dig into a hibachi meal, you would say "Kampai".

Don't fucking litter. Crush your cans and throw away your fucking trash. People who litter alcohol bottles on the streets without a moments thought are worth the trash they're throwing.

Please, for the love of moot, study up on your alcohol-based movies. And remember to practice your dance moves at home, use them wisely, they could be your greatest weapons. Don't text people when you're drunk, doesn't usually work out, unless you know poetry, maybe. Tread carefully.
You should consider learning what you can about your state's ABC training and basic alcohol laws, because it will cover most of the important legal information you'll need to know as a citizen as well as a sales clerk/bartender. did you know that you need different licenses to transport, brew, distill, or sell alcohol in certain numbers and at certain events according to the location, time, day, and even the fucking size of your building? the us government sees alcohol as a drug.

Beer, beer, bourbon, mimosas, screwdrivers, martinis, beer

Literally nothing else is worth drinking. Never touch a cocktail with triple sec. Never drink something with an umbrella in it, or more than one piece of fruit garnish.

Martinis should be a little dirty, vodka (titos or stoli), olives, and stirred. Fucking retarded bartenders shake the hell out of it and get ice shards in it, then i gotta wait 5 minutes for them to melt.

1- Go to a bar and try out simple drinks to get a feeling of what you like.
2- Go to the grocery store and buy small bottles or cans of whatever craft brewery you have and try one of every kind. No meme shit like apricot tea but like, a stout, an IPA, a blond ale, again just to get an idea of what you like.
3- Same idea with wine. You can simply order a glass of white or red whine at whatever decent restaurant you have nearby.

Once you know what kind of stuff you don't hate (you probably won't "like" anything right away), try some variations on it. Don't be afraid to start with sugary mixes, it takes a little while to get used to the "raw" alcohol flavor.

It's me again, Mr. blog posts and duke togo. I just had champagne for the first time tonight. It's Korbel California Champagne, Sweet Cuvee.
I believe it's the only bottle of champagne we have in the store that I could grab, apart from the retarded bottle of Dom Perignon in the display. I was hard pressed to find a champagne and not end up buying a bottle of 'sparkling wine'.

If you want to wow any girl with a dinner, holy shit this stuff will blow minds. It's gotta be champagne Anon, not sparkling wine. You can try to switch it up, maybe, if she prefers a type of wine and you can find it in a sparkling variety from brands like Barefoot, but general champagne is where it's at my negro.

try some nice red wines - Beaujolais is a lovely french wine that's not too potent or expensive
Beers are a topic in themselves; I suggest a few different classic styles (lagers, stouts, english ales, IPAs) and see what you like
spirits are not usually very tasty till you've acquired a taste for booze, but the classic mixes are popular for a reason (G+T, vodka+juice, whisky+coke, tequila and lime)
also keep in mind that certain foods will enhance greatly or spoil the taste of booze and vice-versa. Classic pairings are stuff like beer with heavy foods, red meat with red wine, white meat and fish with white wine
