Hello,
I am a huge faggot and need help. I am a shitty home cook (just stick to recipes, barely do things outside of sticking to recipes) but am lucky in that my parents want to get me christmas gifts. I want to get a book that'll help teach me how to REALLY cook, or any cooking supplies that I may have overlooked (like should I get a mandolin? Do those really cut down on prep time that much?).
I heard Salt Fat Acid Heat was good but it also looks like fucking Chicken Soup for the Teen Girl's Soul by the cover. Seriously that looks horrid. Is it the type of book that'll help me learn cooking basics and shit?

I got a stovetop pressure cooker a couple years ago and that was a real gamechanger for me. Those cost more than a mandoline, though.
