American here,

What do black currants taste like? I hear that this is a popular flavor in the old world but the plant and all memory of its flavor has been lost to Americans because it's banned.

Hm ... I haven't eaten those in a while.
I think it's kind of a cross between wild blueberry (not the giant store-brought ones), and raspberry . Wild blueberry is far more sour and small than the commercially-grown ones.

Anyway, they're great in jams. You could probably order a fancier black currant jam if you're curious.

If you have any experience with gooseberry, it's somewhat similar to it. Really, the currant as just berries is merely alright.
But currant preserves, by god, are the pinnacle of anything jam-related.

And what interest would they have to lie about it to people?
You could have googled for a few seconds to see that some states allow it instead of making your self look like a frogposting retard.
Here's another article

>New disease-resistant varieties of currants were later developed and in 1966 the government left it up to the states to lift the ban. Quinn persuaded New York state to lift the ban in 2003.

They have a slightly peculiar 'earthy' undertone, more pronounced than red or white currants.
