CK themed somewhat unethical lifeack idea.
So I've only got one knife I want to sharpen, I've been looking at this 50 dollar Whetstone.
Think if I buy it use it once and return it they'll notice?
Just a casual homecook, knife doesn't get too much use.
I'll say it was a gift for my mom but she already had one?
Thoughts?

Don't you have a shop near you where you can sharpen a knife for a few bucks?

Then you atleast can be sure, that the guy doing it, does it right.

You can get 400/800 and 3k and 8k for $47 on Amazon

why would you get a low grit stone when you can just use sandpaper glued to a harder surface?

Because a nice stone gives better feedback and cuts faster. If budget were a concern I'd certainly use the sandpaper, but it's not, so I don't.

>>glued to a hard surface
sure is dumb in here. It's very difficult to get it flat if you are using glue. Just use wet/dry sandpaper and put water on the back of it. The capilliary attraction will stick it down to a flat smooth surface just like glue will, except it will be nice and even. There's also less mess to clean up. A piece of glass is probably your cheapest option for a precise, hard, flat surface.

Because some people aren't broke niggers and maybe fucking around with glue and reams of shredded sandpaper isn't actually better than a tool designed for a specific job

I bought a cheap two sided whetstone at harbor freight. Knife fags will probably talk shit but it works pretty good for just keeping a decent edge.

Use the tool that you can afford. I've used cheapo stones like that, and there is a big difference, I can't stand them, but a shitty stone is certainly better than no stone at all.

>capillary attraction
Dont pretend like you know what you are talking about. The correct term in this scenario would be adhesion, water's tendency to attract to polar substances.
