What the fuck can I make for Christmas dinner (for 6 people) that's cheap but seems fancy? Relatives invited themselves, I said ok, and now realize I can't afford prime rib, filet mignon, lobster tails or any of that shit I was planning. What's left? Coq au vin? I'm a good cook and have access to a gas grill (in addition to the reg kitchen) if anyone has suggestion. Boo-hoo :'(

PS- I hate turkey and ham, but I'll go with it if its the only cheap way out..

Suggest a cheap cut beef roast that's appropriate for xmas and doesn't require brasing or slow-cooking to be tender enough, if you're so smart.

Could you ask them to pitch in some cash for dinner? If you’re hard off and they’re reasonable people I’m sure they’d understand. Especially if you’re competent enough to make something tasty. Otherwise there’s no shame in cooking some nice barbeque like you mentioned earlier, they might appreciate the break from traditional Christmas meats unless they’re snooty. Otherwise I don’t know. Are geese cheap? Cheaper than beef and fancier than chicken would be that or a duck. If you are competent enough to make a fancy Peking style duck I’m sure that they’d be pretty impressed

It's Christmas, order some tamales for fuck's sake. Make a pot of chili for side / garnish. No fucking beans or I'll castrate you. A pan of cheese enchiladas and a corn salad and you're golden.

Sigh. I was planning on ordering online actually, but no filets to be found on supermarket website. Couldn't even find any on walmart website for pickup. Grocery has 4oz lobster tails for 6..99 apiece tho... What could i seve with tiny baked lobstah tails to make seem more substantial without dwarfing the lobstee in the process? Should i serve lobster and another seafood? Lobster and cheap steak?

Then the chicken idea stands, you could make a bunch of chicken kievs or cordon bleus, sure they're not actually that fancy, but they still have some presentation quality to them if done well. Or else you could confit them and pretend they're a fancier meat

Go to your butcher and buy a nice long piece of flap steak (possibly 2 for safety and definitely leftovers.), also ask to buy some fat trimmings for cheap (its normally like less than a dollar a pound since normies don't buy fat), and grab oven safe butcher's twine.
Then go to wallmart and pick up:
For Dinner:
+1 whole pack of Chicken thighs
+2 bags of butter potatoes
+1 bag of carrots
+1 white Onion
+2 cloves of garlic
+2 packs of fresh thyme
+Basil
+2 packs of salted butter
+Cream
+Mushrooms.

Sautee sliced vegetables in olive oil and butter, season with salt and pepper to taste. Add some of the herbs you bought till they taste nice.
Season the deboned raw chicken and steak with salt and pepper time, and smashed garlic
Place the chicken, the vegetables, and the fat chunks evenly onto the skirt steak, then roll tightly, tie up tightly with the butcher twine, and bake on 275 for a few hours until a meat thermometer reads 170 from the inside of the meat. Let rest 10 minutes before serving.

Boil the potatoes and mash them with butter, cream, salt, and pepper.
Sautee the mushrooms and whatever is left of the carrots in a pan untill soft and delicious, Season to taste.
For Dessert (To be eaten sitting together in the living space while talking. Put the pie in the oven on low for like 15 minutes before serving):
+Hot cocoa mix and marshmallows
+milk
+Grocery store apple pie, and some vanilla icecream

Add beer, wine, lambic, and some peppermint shnaps and you've got a really comfy poorfag Christmas.

I've only ever heard of duck leg confit. Wouldn't chicken confit be served room temp? Chicken kiev sounds good. My husbands mom is coming over and she's italian-american-- dont want to compete with her "famous" lasagna, but maybe a nice chicken parm with some pasta, and antipasto 1st course. Maybe a fish course, to ape, in part, Italian xmas eve...
