We have something analogous in Michigan, the Pasty. Not sure what the origins are, outside of vaguely "european". We do have a lot of finns and norweigans though so maybe it descends from those settlers having to make do with what they had on hand?

I see now, it appears the pirogi was meant to be fried and have a crispier outer shell, while the pasty has a flaky buttery crust closer to a crescent roll. If this is the ancestor of the pasty it would make sense, settlers with few ingredients on-hand attempting to replicate something from back home and finding a new way to do it, baking in this case over frying.
I might be 100% wrong though, just musing.

Please learn some history. I'm saying this as nicely as possible (I'm from northern Wisconsin and dearly love the UP). Cornish pasties were brought by Cornish working class people to Upper Michigan because of all the mining in the area and Cornish miners were a huge subset of the mining population there.

Here's the inside. The purplish stuff is purple potatoes (made sure to get the waxy kind as recommended). Some of the other ones have bigger crimps and I'm going to make sure to try to get them a bit bigger next time, they were my favorite part.
I can't believe these things aren't more popular in the US, they're cheap, massive, filling, and absolutely delicious with little effort.

I feel the same way, but I recognize it is because I have been brought up in the western world which puts heavy emphasis on sweetness and refined sugar. On the other hand, even though sugar has been known for ages to the Chinese and Indians, cheap and heavily refined sugar is a byproduct of western industrialization in the 1800's, and before then, it was an expensive commodity in eastern cultures. And the result of this is likely that the majority of people gravitated toward the subtle but ultimately less sweet tastes of things like adzuki or fruits.

In essence, it's like eating ghost pepper, and then trying to appreciate a bell or jalapeno pepper.Exposure to intensity tends to desensitize a person.

They were all great, as was almost everything else that I ate on the trip. Japanese bakeries have an unprecedented level of choice.

Mochi was disgusting though. And the kobe beef I had at a teppanyaki place was a dissapointment; it melted in the mouth but hardly had any flavour.
