11614680 No.11614680 [Reply] [Original]

I know next to nothing about cooking and some weeks ago an anon gave me the advice of cooking meat with butter instead of only using olive oil
So I tried it and it tastes delicious since the meat ends up with a very strong butter flavor (maybe because I used too much butter)
The question is: is that healthy? What do anons use when cooking and frying? Is butter something you can use daily or is it more of a once per week thing?

there are good fats and bad fats and a lot of nutrients are fat-soluble meaning that they need to be combined with fat to be absorbed by your body but afaik animal fats should be avoided.
perhaps try smaller portions if you're worried. suppliment with extra grains with fibre and protein to fill you up.

take what i say with a grain of salt because i'm no expert.

And the science is not exactly conclusive about the relationship between dietary cholesterol and the cholesterol in your body. Your body makes cholesterol on its own, just like a cow's body makes cholesterol on its own.
Personally I cook my steaks in bacon fat.

It depends on how much fat is in the rest of your diet, and how healthy you already are. If you're an obese smoker and have heart disease, you should probably avoid eating more butter, otherwise if you're healthy then it's fine. Just don't start taking in too many calories either.

"Animal products bad" squad get off this board. There are literally zero studies showing the Heath effects when it comes to people eating animal products and not. Not credible studies. They all don't list other factors and on top of that don't consider weather the person was eating a healthy diet or not. Biggest thing Is Healthy omnivore diet is far superior to shitty unbalanced vegan diet at the end of the day. Unhealthy meat diet is worse than a really well rounded vegan one but you're going vegan for your own ego it doesn't change your health. Unless you transition from eating shitty to eating healthy because everything you ate that was awful for you was animal based in some way.

I do this, usually I will put in a little bit of olive oil before adding butter to a pan for whenever I want to cook something and it avoids burning the butter pretty well.

Also, random question but when I saute my garlic for soup it doesn't taste as good compared to putting it right in towards the end. What's the point of sauteing garlic when it destroys most of the flavor it gives. I compared cooking a bulb of garlic and to a couple raw cloves and the latter was better. I'm guessing there's something I'm doing wrong?

If the flavour comes from aetheric oils (garlic, herbs, etc.) you want to avoid high heat as these oils evaporate quickly. Pepper flakes are less critical, I usually add them at the end.

Butter is still fat. It's unhealthy to consume too much and it's really easy to consume too much.
When it comes to cooking, there's a reason tons of the highest rated restaurants around the world use butter in everything
>Making a roux?
>butter
>Cooking a steak?
>butter unless it's flame grilled, and even then butter basting is an option
>even god damn cookies use butter
It has a pretty low smoke point so I don't use it for frying, I use it as a finisher in foods like eggs or rice dishes. For example, I start with oil and finish with butter, using less oil to compensate.

You're asking one of the most contended questions there is. Basically the data is unclear and conflicting. Some say saturated fats (found in butter) are bad and some say they're ok and that the problem is fats found in seed oils. Everyone seems to agree olive oil is good for you and that trans fats are poisonous though.

Basically people have been eating tons of butter for thousands of years so it can't be the worst thing for you, but if you're worried you can limit your use of it and replace it with olive oil.

>> No.11618900

>>11618885
but isn't it also true that frying with olive oil makes it not healthy?

>> No.11619226

It is not healthy for you to be eating steak cooked in butter every day, no.

I use butter in eggs and baked goods. Beyond that, I use olive, peanut, or canola oil while cooking. I will sometimes baste something intended to be very rich with butter.

The thing about cooking is that a lot of good stuff you can make is not really very good for you. But that's the thing: if you're cooking, you control how everything is cooked and what goes into it. So don't be afraid to use butter, just know that you shouldn't be eating fatty meat with a ton of butter every day. Just like it's fine to fry chicken or make french fries, just don't do it every day.
