Depends on personal beliefs. I.E. if you're vegan because you don't think humans should ever take animal resources, or if you're vegan just because you're against all animal farming practices as being abusive, or if you're vegan because you believe higher animals are capable of suffering and shouldn't be exploited.
I don't get the anti-exploitation ones though. Honeymaking bees are free and happy as fuck. Imagine if you had a really nice luxury condominium, and the only downside is that every once a few months the landlord will come in and steal every single piece of garbage in the place because he loves to eat it. Bee Movie wasn't a documentary.

Vegans can eat whatever they want just like anyone else, veganism is a description of their preferences. By the definition, if you eat honey, you aren't strictly vegan, and all of your holier-than-thou fast-ffod-guzzling 'pals' will be sure to let you know.

You really believe bee keepers remove all of the honey and don't leave enough for the colony to feed on through the winter? That's why you often see 2 large boxes (brood boxes) on the base where the bees store their honey and smaller boxes on top of those during spring and summer where the bees store excess honey that the beekeeper collects.

>> No.11589598

>>11589566
i know they dont but the analogy was kinda shit
>the landlord will come in and steal every single piece of garbage
they just take out the excess the bees probably wont need
i guess they could take all of it and put some sugarwater nearby though

you're not making any sense

No such thing. Bees literally work themselves to death to produce that honey to help ensure the hive's survival. By stealing their honey you are condemning thousands of them to death for each cup of honey you use.
If you eat honey - or condone its use in any way - you are a murderer.

Veganism is the Harkness rule applied to food. If it can't consent, you can't take it's shit. Meanwhile if that cow is at least 18 years old, speaks english, and says oh yeah baby suck that milk out of my udders - then it's totally OK to drink milk as a vegan. Get to work, genetic engineers.

True, they make it because that's what they're instincts tell them to do. They don't fill up boxes and evaluate the quantity and say, "hey guys, we got enough made, let's take a break." There's only one queen producing brood so the hive stays in a relative population equilibrium barring disease. However, the bees will keep producing honey as long as they have a place to store it. Thus, although they'd never need it, after they fill the 2 large brood boxes they will continue making it in additional boxes that go on top. The bees will not miss that honey or suffer whatsoever from you harvesting it. And yeah, it's not uncommon to supplement with sugar water through the winter but if they have a large supply in the 2 brood boxes that's not a requirement particularly in climates with shorter winters.

Vegans have some good points, but like every political, economic or religious philosophy they carry their attempt at consistency to ideals too far which make no practical sense and thus alienate the vast majority of sensible folk. It's the same reason both the political left and right, the abrahamic and muslim extremists are destined to fail.

Modification of the vegan ideal that animals should not be exploited to exclude concientious bee keepers and backyard chicken egg producers from the umbrella term "exploited" would go a long way toward making it more acceptable to more people in the long run.

tl;dr doctrinaire adherence to ideals w/o compromise results in the marginalisation of every social movement, and thus their ultimate failure.
