The thinner you slice or the smaller you mince an onion, the milder it'll be. It helps to have a sharp knife. Thick slices of raw onion will seem a lot harsher because of the chemical produced when the cell walls get damaged, but if you damage more of the cell walls by slicing it more thinly, it'll seem milder even if you're eating the same amount. I've gotten people who said they don't like raw onion to enjoy it by just preparing them properly.
