Well, it wouldn't come from Subway, that's for sure.

Good mom n pop sub shops and/or italian delis, famous ones like Central Grocery works, delicious bread with good crust whether italian or some kind of panini or boule, provolone assorted cuts like mortadella, sopressata, various salumi or hams. Grilled marinated peppers, eggplant, onions, olives, fresh veggies, or spicy pepper dressing, oil, vinegar, maybe some basil. That's the best.
Hot sub? Mom n pop places that griddle up shaved ribeye , onions, mushrooms, peppers, and douse the whole thing with salt, pepper, oregano and good cheese. Crisp bread or even garlic bread.

Publix does an excellent choice of subs minus the original cheesesteak or any hot kinds, if you have no local good places. Their fried chicken is extremely well liked, and things like cordon blue subs, or boars head meat choices, plus choice of pickles, cukes, tomatoes, etc and good choices of drinks, and chips, because hey, grocery store. I think if more Publix' put in eat-in areas like Whole Foods does, they'd win over more and more like workers who need to get inside a bit to eat. The big Publix in Miami did that after Hurricane Andrew rebuild, which was smart, but I haven't seen too many other stores built in recent years that have it whatsoever, and yet their subs are #1. Fresh Market and Whole Foods, as well as Safeway and Wegmans and Harris Teeter are eat--in.
