Nothing really. Soup kitchens are really open to everyone. Just put on some old looking clothes or dirty sweats and a hoodie maybe another heavy looking jacket over it with an old pair of sneakers, don't shave if you have a beard.

It's not great though, the slice of turkey/ham will most likely be dry af, soup full of undercooked chickpeas, and having to be around poor, angry, schizo poor people in line and while you're eating. If you're not a people person, I wouldn't suggest you going. There's bound to be someone trying to bring up a conversation.

Friend i know spent over a year doing research on homeless behavior. Spending days with them in different cities and getting to know them and their habits. Nothing is preventing you. I was homeless once but that didn't preven't me from seeing how things were going. All comed all served, that's the point. You don't have to be homeless, if that's what you think it is then you've not gotten the plot. I don't know, it takes a lot of volunteers and time and space. Space is a lot, that's usually churches or temples, they're usually cool about that and if anyone gets out of line like an assholes it's "corrected" internally. That said in NYC and NY in general a lot of folk come together to make things happen for folk that don't have much. There were times that folk helped me and now I want to help others here.

you could do it, but...

1) the food isn't very good
2) a lot of the people stink, meaning the whole area is kinda funky.
3) a lot of the people are assholes, drug addicts, etc. I used to volunteer in a soup kitchen, and people would sneak into the back and try to steal stuff. I guarantee some argument will break out during your meal. it will be an overall depressing experience.

I volunteered in one once with an aspiring troop of Army recruits that I was interested in being a part of.
I'm not about to say all homeless across the nation are the same in every state and city, but I noticed how either scared they were, or how much they didn't give a flying shit about anything.
These people rushed up to the counter when the food was announced as ready to be served and the big fat lady had to yell at them like they were children to get in a line.

They can probably tell if you're homeless or not, but they probably won't care. And there's always enough, don't worry about the guilt of there not being enough for the street urchins.

This. I volunteered several times. A lot of the 'clients' were ungrateful and would argue about portion sizes. Some of the people had street grudges and would occasionally try to start fist fights in the church we served in. It was usually over meth or theft of something petty
