2x Hoppythings from Terrapin
2x Sea Quench from Dogfish
2x Blood Ipa thing from Dogfish.
2x 16oz cans of Boom Sauce from Lord Hobo.
2x Death before Disco porter from Left Hand
1 16oz can of a local gose Sun Gose Down
And 1 16oz can of a Marzen from Tampa.

I fuckin love stouts but they're expensive. Probably for the better so I don't overdrink them and get bored.
It wasn't until Gold Coast's Old Rasputin that I got hooked. Before I had a Sam Smith oatmeal but didn't really appreciate it as much.
This week I've had Samuel Smith's Chocolate Stout and Imperial Stout and they're gooood. I tried Dragon's Milk and it's not bad but I'm not a fan of the bourbon flavor. I want to taste beer not bourbon.

Any economical stouts out there? I just want something thick, heavy, and bitter without spending near $20 for a fucking 4 pack.

Beer has massive amounts of phytoestrogens from the hops

Have a glass of wine with dinner instead, high acidic white wines for lighter fare, high tannic red wines if you're having a lot of animal fat (animal fat is good for your testosterone but also kills your appetite so there's a tradeoff)

Honestly the best way to boost your appetite is to move more, instead of sitting in front of a TV all day playing video games, 1 hour of cardio in the morning and 1 hour in the evening.

Drinking some Lagunitas Brown Shugga. Holy shit this is some overrated beer. All it is, is a generic strong ale with a slight brown sugar sweetness. Nothing about this warrants the hype it gets...

Well whatever happened, they certainly have a fair share of the market here in commiefornia. Come to think of it, not much of what they offer is all that appealing/great to me. I'd much rather have anything Sierra Nevada, Stone, or even overpriced Ballast Point has to offer.

Shame, cause I actually went into this Shugga expecting something top tier, given its popularity and love around here.

No brewing tradition, historically speaking. The germans/belgians have been doing it since fucking forever, as have the British (which the early American colonists brought over to the new world). The spanish had more of a winemaking tradition than a brewing one (so Mexicans didnt really inherit much of a brewing culture), and the asians mainly brewed things like sake, soju, and the like. I'd imagine the development of each culture's fermented beverages was heavily influenced by the ingredients they had at hand. So for asians and mexicans, beer is something they're fairly new at. We are starting to see some craft breweries pop up in Mexico, and given how the Japanese have taken to whiskey production, they seem pretty willing to try their hand at western styles of alcohol production. So you may start seeing some interesting developments from those regions in the near future.

>>11481907
The very best ones dont overpower the malts with the adjuncts, but enhance the complexity of the dark roasted malts. The flavored stout boom is arguably a bit of a newer thing than even the NEIPA explosion, driven by brewers like Evil Twin absolutely loading their stouts with adjuncts. A good basic stout typically hits nice roasty flavors somewhere in the range of cocoa and coffee anyways, so its not surprising that actually adding chocolate and coffee and vanilla and shit like that can produce a tasty beer. That being said, I think dessert-like stouts have started wearing out their welcome and you can see more savory variations gaining in popularity, like oyster stouts. The aforementioned Sunday Morning Stout and Founders Breakfast Stouts are some widely available stouts to try if you want to get the general idea.

That might be the case now, but that's because craft beer isnt even really on the radar for the Japs. Just look at what their autistic focus has done for their whiskey industry. What beers do you recommend for cooking?

I don't drink. I very rarely buy cooking sherry, and when I do I usually get the cheapest store brand for a particular recipe. What beers are recommended for beer batter, or other recipes?

Let's say I've got some bratwurst and I'm browning them and some minced onions with some olive oil. And I want to cover them with beer and simmer them for 45 minutes or so. What brand of beer is suited to this?

Thanks.

Honestly, it depends entirely on what flavors you want to express in whatever you're cooking. Try different beers and see how the flavors would mesh with whatever you're making. I only ever really use beers in stews/chili, and my go-to for that is Breakfast Stout because it's relatively cheap and tasty. Maybe once in a while I'll use a smoked porter to mix things up a little.

It is true.

>The effect of hops on the finished beer varies by type and use, though there are two main hop types: bittering and aroma.[2] Bittering hops have higher concentrations of alpha acids, and are responsible for the large majority of the bitter flavour of a beer. European (so-called "noble") hops typically average 5–9% alpha acids by weight (AABW), and the newer American cultivars typically range from 8–19% AABW. Aroma hops usually have a lower concentration of alpha acids (~5%) and are the primary contributors of hop aroma and (nonbitter) flavour. Bittering hops are boiled for a longer period of time, typically 60–90 minutes, to maximize the isomerization of the alpha acids. They often have inferior aromatic properties, as the aromatic compounds evaporate during the boil.

Might help explain why IPAs and such are so popular in American microbreweries as opposed to European ones.

Most of the recent American IPAs are far less bitter and easier drinking than the IPAs of five-plus years ago. This is true of both West Coast and New England styles, but especially the latter. The best and most sought after New England IPAs are close to fruit juice in flavor and texture, with a smooth finish and almost no bitterness. Imagine Dole made a beer, or think of a fruit juice made from beer ingredients. Modern hop varietals imbue beer with flavors like guava, pineapple, and passion fruit rather than the pine resin and grass taste of old school IPAs. Try to find single hop IPA products like Noble's Citra Showers or Alvarado's Nelson Baby to really experience a modern hop forward IPA and to learn the differences between the cultivars.

>You're retarded.
Nigger, do some reading. IPAs don't require specialty equipment that a lot of other niche beers did and it's alot more forgiving with mistakes than other styles of beer. It's the most obvious choice of beer for a beginning North American brewery, hence why practically every craft brewery has at least one IPA and it's nearly always one of their firsts, regardless of other beers they might brew.

I never said that. I said that if you outright dislike IPA then you probably just don't like beer, because it's just the 4 main ingredients in beer pushed to their limits; it's purity is what makes it so popular.
>don't require specialty equipment that a lot of other niche beers did and it's alot more forgiving with mistakes than other styles of beer
What in the actual fuck are you referring to? No, literally explain what you mean. You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort?
>the most obvious choice of beer for a beginning North American brewery

Where have you been? Barrel aged everything has taken off like crazy, even before the NEIPA thing got off the ground, thanks largely to Founders hyping up bourbon stouts so much. There's also a respectable revival of sour ales going on as well. Really, I think that the meme-age of beer is finally winding down. People, by and large, are focusing more on finding good beer instead of weird beer.

>>11484460
He never said anything about making a "decent ipa". Most IPAs on the market right now are garbage, and its a very safe style to brew because you can always hide your fuckups behind a huge hop bomb. Making a quality IPA is hard. But that's not what most brewers are doing.

>> No.11484492

>>11484462
>You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort?

No, hop complexity is a characteristic of a quality IPA, which you can't make if you fuck up the wort. You can, however, just make it overpoweringly bitter instead and claim that it was your intent to brew it that way, filling the market shelves with more swill.

>> No.11484522

>>11484492
Okay, so what? Breweries that do that go out of business, because more and more people are educated about beer these days and have enough affordable choices (unlike wine) to actually know what they like and what's not good. 3 years ago the closest city to me had an article in the paper that something like 200 new breweries had opened up in the area that year, and something like 80% of them are now closed, but the ones that are still open are great.

I fell like we agree, but there are trolls who simply hate IPAs for whatever reason and reduce every IPA to, "we fucked up early on so let's just overpower everything with bitterness", which I just find ridiculous - as though hops aren't an essential part of beer but some cheap adjunct brought in to mask the flavor. Yes it's hyperbole when I say that people who don't like IPA probably don't like beer, but that's the reason.

>I never said that. I said that if you outright dislike IPA then you probably just don't like beer, because it's just the 4 main ingredients in beer pushed to their limits; it's purity is what makes it so popular.
Which is a retarded argument. The taste is ultimately what makes someone like it or not and that varies from individual. There are dozens of varieties of beer which balance the ingredients in different ways and what you like is up to your preference. Arguing that if you don't like one of them because you think it's more 'pure' beer is utter nonsense.
>What in the actual fuck are you referring to? No, literally explain what you mean. You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort?

>>11484492
>Because it's still the most popular style, even though people have been bitching about IPA over-saturation for well over a decade, it's still what people buy.
True, but hope fatigue does appear to be a thing and craft light beers seem to be growing in number and popularity now that a lot of breweries are in a good position to compete with macrobrews. Because there is a large market for people who want craft lagers and the like, and appealing to them is a far wiser move than declaring that they must not like beer.

A beer that has a shelf life far shorter than most retail stores will keep it on the shelf for.

It should still be okay, being a mostly West Coast style IPA that just hasn't been filtered. Not everything labeled "Hazy" is necessarily intended to be an East Coast style juice bomb. Those are the ones with a hard and fast 90 day recommended drinking period.

What’s the difference between a porter and a stout? I’m in the process of learning more about beer and I’ve really been enjoying imperial stouts lately. Also any recommendations for good imperial stouts would be appreciated (American btw)
