Cop or not?
looks like christmas came early, love this stuff
>>11474529>pretty much candyI like TK just fine, but honestly can't enjoy most Belgians anymore because how how sickly sweet and overly malty they are. I'd go for a well balanced, hop forward West Coast IPA any day.

I fuckin love stouts but they're expensive. Probably for the better so I don't overdrink them and get bored. It wasn't until Gold Coast's Old Rasputin that I got hooked. Before I had a Sam Smith oatmeal but didn't really appreciate it as much. This week I've had Samuel Smith's Chocolate Stout and Imperial Stout and they're gooood. I tried Dragon's Milk and it's not bad but I'm not a fan of the bourbon flavor. I want to taste beer not bourbon.Any economical stouts out there? I just want something thick, heavy, and bitter without spending near $20 for a fucking 4 pack.

>>11478436Was going to say the same thing. It's a great introduction to real beer.
>>11478436Sierra Nevada is definitely what got me into real beer. Shame that all the new stuff they put out are IPA's. They're kindof becoming Redhook brewery where it's all IPA's.
>>11477818>go to local brewery with friends>it's called "Beer'd">it's exactly what you would expect inside, Harry potter merch on the walls, other hipster millennial shit everywhere>literally EVERY beer they had for tastings is an IPA, we're talking like 15 different IPAs>some of what I tasted had to be almost 90% HBV (Hops by volume)They had a guest cider that was pretty tasty though.
>>11478386I shit you not, no fucking politics or garbage involved, but Im-peach-ment from behemoth is bretty gud.

>>11478556So...order an IPA that sounds like something you'd like? I think it's kind of retarded to think that every brewery has to make every style of beer, and getting the guest cider is what people who don't like beer in the first place do.
>>11478568You're just trolling, right?
>>11478572Not that guy, but he went with friends and probably didn't care that much I'd imagine, just something you notice at some beer places. Like variety packs being mostly IPAs or something.
>>11478572It's called trying something new. It's good for us to do even if we don't end up liking it
>>11478588I understand people complaining if you go to a bar and it's nothing but IPAs, even though IPAs are the most popular. But at a brewery it's like, okay, I was only going to be drinking beer from this brewery in the first place, I guess it turns out that they mostly do IPAs. If some friends said, "hop in, we're going to check out this new brewery" and it turned out to be all cider I'd be a little disappointed, but I'd still try their cider instead of ordering a bottle of Heineken.
>>11478556I love beer, it's just that the craft scene is over obsessed with IPAs right now when there are so many different styles to make.>>11478572I did and I even liked a few of the beers I tasted.>>11478588>Like variety packs being mostly IPAs or something.100% this.

Drinking some Lagunitas Brown Shugga. Holy shit this is some overrated beer. All it is, is a generic strong ale with a slight brown sugar sweetness. Nothing about this warrants the hype it gets...
>>11480974Lagunitas was never that great. I still don't understand how they got so popular to get bought out.
>>11480990Well whatever happened, they certainly have a fair share of the market here in commiefornia. Come to think of it, not much of what they offer is all that appealing/great to me. I'd much rather have anything Sierra Nevada, Stone, or even overpriced Ballast Point has to offer. Shame, cause I actually went into this Shugga expecting something top tier, given its popularity and love around here.
>>11480974Really? I love brown shugga still. I like lagunitas because while they arent as consistently good as SN is, they still sell their shit at a reasonable price and will randomly knock it out of the park for dirt cheap

I guess I just went into this expecting more than I should have. Still good, especially for 9 bucks a sixer, but not something I would go out of my way to get these next few months while it's in-season.

Decent beer. Nothing special on its own but, like most Asian beers, pairs *really* well with noodles or soup
Why are Asians and Mexicans so fucking terrible at beer?
What's the deal with flavored stouts? Does chocolate stout really taste like chocolate? I've admittedly only ever had a couple imperial stouts but I never really felt they'd taste better with milk or chocolate mixed in.
>>11481863I've never been a huge fan of lager but Tiger has grown on me since I used to travel a lot and it's the least shitty stuff you can get in a lot of places in Asia and the middle east. Most of the local major domestics like Angkor and Saigon are absolutely disgusting even compared to other lagers.
>>11481872Not enough experience.
>>11481872No brewing tradition, historically speaking. The germans/belgians have been doing it since fucking forever, as have the British (which the early American colonists brought over to the new world). The spanish had more of a winemaking tradition than a brewing one (so Mexicans didnt really inherit much of a brewing culture), and the asians mainly brewed things like sake, soju, and the like. I'd imagine the development of each culture's fermented beverages was heavily influenced by the ingredients they had at hand. So for asians and mexicans, beer is something they're fairly new at. We are starting to see some craft breweries pop up in Mexico, and given how the Japanese have taken to whiskey production, they seem pretty willing to try their hand at western styles of alcohol production. So you may start seeing some interesting developments from those regions in the near future.>>11481907The very best ones dont overpower the malts with the adjuncts, but enhance the complexity of the dark roasted malts. The flavored stout boom is arguably a bit of a newer thing than even the NEIPA explosion, driven by brewers like Evil Twin absolutely loading their stouts with adjuncts. A good basic stout typically hits nice roasty flavors somewhere in the range of cocoa and coffee anyways, so its not surprising that actually adding chocolate and coffee and vanilla and shit like that can produce a tasty beer. That being said, I think dessert-like stouts have started wearing out their welcome and you can see more savory variations gaining in popularity, like oyster stouts. The aforementioned Sunday Morning Stout and Founders Breakfast Stouts are some widely available stouts to try if you want to get the general idea.
>>11481759Now why cant we have more clean jokes on this site like this one?
>>11481975Mexicans are leaps and bounds ahead of the japs because of the massive influx of germans after ww2. It's the main reason their macros are actually decent.
>>11480974>LagunitasI drank their IPA, maximus, little sumpin ale as well as brown shugga and they all tasted the same. Way too much citrus flavor.
>>11482009That might be the case now, but that's because craft beer isnt even really on the radar for the Japs. Just look at what their autistic focus has done for their whiskey industry. If that energy ever decides to tune into artisan beer production, it wouldnt take much for their beer production to turn into something outstanding.
>>11482027Arent they winning wine competitions left and right now too?
The Japanese beer market reminds me a lot of the American scene thirty or forty years ago, and they fucking love beer so the country seems like a huge powder keg of great craft stuff waiting to explode. Better get back to studying those kanji.

>>11483514>studentsThere's your problem. At least in the states, most of our university students look for the highest alcohol/price ratio without any consideration whatsoever to flavor.

>>11483526>most of our university students look for the highest alcohol/price ratio without any consideration whatsoever to flavorThat's students everywhere and what I was implying. This is probably the cheapest beer there is (0,56 muribucks) but even most students think it's too rancid and are willing to pay a few cents more per can.
This is a great thread to discuss alcoholic beverages without interruption.
how do we get al/ck/ back, lads?

>>11474069I've got a stupid question for the thread. What beers do you recommend for cooking?I don't drink. I very rarely buy cooking sherry, and when I do I usually get the cheapest store brand for a particular recipe. What beers are recommended for beer batter, or other recipes?Let's say I've got some bratwurst and I'm browning them and some minced onions with some olive oil. And I want to cover them with beer and simmer them for 45 minutes or so. What brand of beer is suited to this? Thanks.
>>11483598>>11483453I meant higher than the 5% that's standard where I'm from
>>11483702The flavor compounds in hops turn intensely and unpleasantly bitter when cooked. Your best bet is a nice stout or doppelbock.
>>11483172You got it, bub. I really wish they'd put out a hoppy lager year round. They're seriously great at making them
>>11483760Thanks. Do you have any recommendations for brands?
>>11483783Honestly, it depends entirely on what flavors you want to express in whatever you're cooking. Try different beers and see how the flavors would mesh with whatever you're making. I only ever really use beers in stews/chili, and my go-to for that is Breakfast Stout because it's relatively cheap and tasty. Maybe once in a while I'll use a smoked porter to mix things up a little.tl;dr: experiment and get creative.
>>11483760>implying the flavor compounds in hops are not intensely and unpleasantly bitter when uncooked
>just turned 21>vermont>majority of the beer aisle is ipa>couldn't find any lagers besides pbrs and narraganset I don't mind ipas but I thought this was just a meme
>>11483997There is a distinction between pleasant bitterness and unpleasant bitterness. Coffee is bitter. Chocolate is bitter. Coffee and chocolate are pleasant things to consume.
>>11484001IPAs are the hipster beer. The vast majority of craft IPAs are absolute fucking unbalanced garbage that taste like youre drinking flowers.
>>11483997>>11484020I have heard the claim that hops grown in North America have a much stronger bitter flavor than European hops, due to differences in climate and soil chemistry, so much so that some American beers use much less hops than European beers do.
>>11484055>the most popular style of craft beer is hipsterBoy you are some kind of stupid

>>11484189Meh, Weinstephanner is better.
>>11484206I will, just had my first dopplebock experience, Ayinger of course, and looking for more.
>>11484236>for those of us who aren't used to eating raw hopsLiterally anything that isn't dry hopped? You do realize that all beer has hops, right?
>>11484242I still prefer Ayinger but Weihenstephanner is damn good
>>11484245I know but in IPAs it becomes a one note song to me. maybe i've just been drinking swill though
>>11484080It is true. >The effect of hops on the finished beer varies by type and use, though there are two main hop types: bittering and aroma. Bittering hops have higher concentrations of alpha acids, and are responsible for the large majority of the bitter flavour of a beer. European (so-called "noble") hops typically average 5–9% alpha acids by weight (AABW), and the newer American cultivars typically range from 8–19% AABW. Aroma hops usually have a lower concentration of alpha acids (~5%) and are the primary contributors of hop aroma and (nonbitter) flavour. Bittering hops are boiled for a longer period of time, typically 60–90 minutes, to maximize the isomerization of the alpha acids. They often have inferior aromatic properties, as the aromatic compounds evaporate during the boil.Might help explain why IPAs and such are so popular in American microbreweries as opposed to European ones.
>>11484236Sierra nevada pale ale is an okay standard. Two hearted is as well. I'd always try local first though
>>11484288Honestly, I find most craft brews are more interested in pushing boundaries than making good beer. The best beer in the world comes from corporate, well established breweries with a long history and track record; the trouble is, so does the worst beer.
>>11484210>lmao if you don't like this single beer style out of the 40+ that exist and was fairly obscure until it oversaturated the American market yet is still far from dominant there let alone the rest of the world, you don't like beer
>>11484288Two Hearted is what I drink when I don’t know what to drink
>>11484310That's why you find a local brewery you can trust. There are a couple that I go to that will make great traditional lagers and ales, while also throwing in a couple curve balls. Not many find this happy medium though.
>>11484323>was fairly obscure until it oversaturated the American marketSo for almost the past 20 years? How old are you, anon?
>>11484339It's a good standard. At 7% though I had to switch to a local blonde ale. Dont drink much anymore so one or two beers will do me in
>>11484261Most of the recent American IPAs are far less bitter and easier drinking than the IPAs of five-plus years ago. This is true of both West Coast and New England styles, but especially the latter. The best and most sought after New England IPAs are close to fruit juice in flavor and texture, with a smooth finish and almost no bitterness. Imagine Dole made a beer, or think of a fruit juice made from beer ingredients. Modern hop varietals imbue beer with flavors like guava, pineapple, and passion fruit rather than the pine resin and grass taste of old school IPAs. Try to find single hop IPA products like Noble's Citra Showers or Alvarado's Nelson Baby to really experience a modern hop forward IPA and to learn the differences between the cultivars.
>>11484363About 20 years ago is when it started its comeback and became a common sight, it isn't until quite recently that it started becoming absurdly omnipresent due to the exponential growth in microbrews who each make 5 varieties of IPA because they're the easiest to manufacture.
>>11484387>it isn't until quite recently that it started becoming absurdly omnipresentSo, more like 10 years ago.>because they're the easiest to manufactureYou're retarded.
>>11484398>So, more like 10 years ago.Probably less. Not sure how this pedantry disproves my point that you'd have to be an utter moron to think that IPAs = representative of all beer when it's an incredibly recent style to become mainstream. >You're retarded.Nigger, do some reading. IPAs don't require specialty equipment that a lot of other niche beers did and it's alot more forgiving with mistakes than other styles of beer. It's the most obvious choice of beer for a beginning North American brewery, hence why practically every craft brewery has at least one IPA and it's nearly always one of their firsts, regardless of other beers they might brew.
>>11484001just buy some switchback or heady topper and stfu
Will barrel-aged beers be the next big thing after IPAs? Even Bud has gotten into it.
>>11484435>some styles are harder to make than other stylesGreat detective work. That doesnt mean making a decent ipa is easy
>>11484435>you'd have to be an utter moron to think that IPAs = representative of all beer when it's an incredibly recent style to become mainstreamI never said that. I said that if you outright dislike IPA then you probably just don't like beer, because it's just the 4 main ingredients in beer pushed to their limits; it's purity is what makes it so popular.>don't require specialty equipment that a lot of other niche beers did and it's alot more forgiving with mistakes than other styles of beerWhat in the actual fuck are you referring to? No, literally explain what you mean. You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort?>the most obvious choice of beer for a beginning North American breweryBecause it's still the most popular style, even though people have been bitching about IPA over-saturation for well over a decade, it's still what people buy.
>>11484450Where have you been? Barrel aged everything has taken off like crazy, even before the NEIPA thing got off the ground, thanks largely to Founders hyping up bourbon stouts so much. There's also a respectable revival of sour ales going on as well. Really, I think that the meme-age of beer is finally winding down. People, by and large, are focusing more on finding good beer instead of weird beer.>>11484460He never said anything about making a "decent ipa". Most IPAs on the market right now are garbage, and its a very safe style to brew because you can always hide your fuckups behind a huge hop bomb. Making a quality IPA is hard. But that's not what most brewers are doing.
>>11484462>You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort? No, hop complexity is a characteristic of a quality IPA, which you can't make if you fuck up the wort. You can, however, just make it overpoweringly bitter instead and claim that it was your intent to brew it that way, filling the market shelves with more swill.
>>11484492Okay, so what? Breweries that do that go out of business, because more and more people are educated about beer these days and have enough affordable choices (unlike wine) to actually know what they like and what's not good. 3 years ago the closest city to me had an article in the paper that something like 200 new breweries had opened up in the area that year, and something like 80% of them are now closed, but the ones that are still open are great.I fell like we agree, but there are trolls who simply hate IPAs for whatever reason and reduce every IPA to, "we fucked up early on so let's just overpower everything with bitterness", which I just find ridiculous - as though hops aren't an essential part of beer but some cheap adjunct brought in to mask the flavor. Yes it's hyperbole when I say that people who don't like IPA probably don't like beer, but that's the reason.
>>11484481>Where have you been?I was sober for 2 years
>>11484460>Great detective work. That doesnt mean making a decent ipa is easyNever said it was, just explaining why IPAs are a logical first step for anyone starting a brewery as opposed to other styles.>>11484462>I never said that. I said that if you outright dislike IPA then you probably just don't like beer, because it's just the 4 main ingredients in beer pushed to their limits; it's purity is what makes it so popular.Which is a retarded argument. The taste is ultimately what makes someone like it or not and that varies from individual. There are dozens of varieties of beer which balance the ingredients in different ways and what you like is up to your preference. Arguing that if you don't like one of them because you think it's more 'pure' beer is utter nonsense. >What in the actual fuck are you referring to? No, literally explain what you mean. You can't really believe that adding more complex flavors from various hops somehow "covers up" a botched wort?Someone already beat me to it>>11484492>Because it's still the most popular style, even though people have been bitching about IPA over-saturation for well over a decade, it's still what people buy.True, but hope fatigue does appear to be a thing and craft light beers seem to be growing in number and popularity now that a lot of breweries are in a good position to compete with macrobrews. Because there is a large market for people who want craft lagers and the like, and appealing to them is a far wiser move than declaring that they must not like beer.
>>11484536*Arguing that if you don't like one of them you don't like beer in essence because you think it's more a 'pure' beer is utter nonsense
