Use nothing but onion and tap water instead of faggy ingredients like salt and butter

Caramelize yellow onions in a pot with some butter or margarine. Once the onions are browned add beef stock, black pepper and a pinch of thyme. Bring to boil and then lower to simmer for about 10 minutes. Poor into bowls that can be placed in oven, top with toasted sliced baguette and sliced Swiss cheese. Bake in oven until cheese is melted and bubbly

this. onion soup should only be caramelized onions and water. Drizzle a bit of sherry vinegar and "wala" it.

I would say dont just brown. Cook the onions for about 45 minutes over low heat, being careful not to burn. The better carmelized the onions, the better soup. Beef stock thyme and a shot of balsamic vinegar should finish it off

Is there a pan that can automatically onions so you don't have to sit there all day?

>Cook the onions for about 45 minutes
that's why most people *need* beef broth in their ONION soup.

Don't even bother if you don't want to put in the effort to make it good. You're the type who would make it bland as fuck then come back here and cry that it sucked. You don't belong in a kitchen, go back to /v/

Made some the other day as vidalia sweet onions were on sale. Caramalized 3 large onions on low heat in evoo and butter for @ 1.5 hours. Deglazed with some cognac, added @ 1qt venison stock and a bouquet garni of thyme, rosemary and bay leaf. Simmered for 30 minutes, lightly toasted some sourdough slices, put in bowls topped with gouda cheese and broiled until cheese was bubbly and beginning to brown. Christ, it was heaven in a bowl. Everyone clapped in american at the table.

There's a great recipe in Fine Cooking magazine, soup edition. The cover of the actual magazine was French onion soup. I took that from my dads house and made a few things out of it over the years.
I was able to find it online for you.
