If you want to rank bottom shelf vodkas you should run them through a carbon based water filter and freeze them first. Depending on the vodka you can cheat out something substantially better than what you paid for. Stolichnaya and Green Mark improve the most IMO.

That said you will be losing any positive flavour a vodka might have and as you get to more expensive stuff you'll find that shitty filtering is not how they cut their costs.

For vodka drank by itself (which I never do), I go for mouthfeel more than "taste". Which should be pretty flavorless if made right.

I use vodka more for fortifying something weaker that I want to taste flavor of. For example, I'll take a sweeter, lower proof liqueur and add vodka to it to strengthen the drink without disturbing the flavor of the said liqueur.

Same idea with a Bloody Mary. The purpose of vodka in a bloody is to fortify the spicy tomato juice mixture, without altering the taste.

Anyway I thought they were just finished in sherry casks. A year at the most. And a token finishing at that, since most sherry comes out after the first barrelling and they are reused without being refilled with sherry. Glenfiddich for example is sherry finished, but they move a lot of product and there isn't much sherry taste imo.
