Among other things, Chik-fil-a has a verbal intelligence test as a part of the hiring process. Applicants have to write a short essay about the person they most admire. It's not the only component of hiring, but it's a pretty important one. I think it's technically illegal to administer a formal IQ test, but this does just about as well for this kind of work.

Think back to your high school classroom and think about the kids who could not write an essay to save their life. The kinds of people who are able to write good essays are usually people who read books. Highly conscientious workers are able to multitask on their duties, work amicably with customers, and will actively work to avoid conflict with their coworkers. That's really all you need to make a workplace run smoothly. You'd be surprised at how incompetent the workers are in the average fast food burger joint, so when you just don't hire the shitheads, things run so smoothly.

Long answer to a short question:

Worked at Chic-Fil-A for 5 month before going off to uni. There are a few main reasons for speed and quality there.

1. We have timers on every order. Green is <2 minutes, yellow is 2<x<5 minutes, and red is >5 minutes. I worked in the kitchen, and the fuckers up front would start yelling if you got anywhere close to red. Ours was extremely efficient, but it's different for different locations.

2. >>11424329 yes. Regular fried, spicy fried, strips, nuggs, fries, and then grilled shit/salads. Everything works on a fairly efficient system (kanban system), but getting a bunch of grilled orders is hell because they take like double the time to make.

3. >>11424266 you do have to take an intelligence test to get in. This is true. However, for me, it wasn't an essay, it was more of a basic english/math test. Literally middle school level. We were given an hour and I finished in like 8 minutes. If you can't pass this, you don't deserve to have a job. So keeps people who have single digit IQ out of CFA.

4. Our manager was an elderly white Christian man. All of the "managers" were white Christians. However, there was no limit as to who could be a "team leader", which is between a normal employee and a manager. However, it was almost exclusively older Christian whites that got to be managers. This has nothing to do with intelligence, but they operate on a different mindset/work ethic that is suited to fast food.

5. Chick-Fil-A does not treat its employees well. I was told when hired that we would never stay past 10:45 p.m, only to find out that that 11:15 was the normal time to leave. Also, in AZ we were paid 11.50 an hour, which is just a dollar above minimum wage.

6. Finally, the turnover rate is insane. There are always new workers coming in, but the workers that do stay, stay forever. People had been working there 5-10+ years and were insanely efficient at their jobs and knew how to keep the restaurant running.
