Whiskey thread?

What are you drinking? What's good and what's not?

If anyone has any recommendations for travel market/duty free bottles, I would like to hear it.

I typically choose any other drink over whiskey if there are options, but I've been looking to get into whiskey as of late. Are there better introductions to whiskey than others (single-malt vs. blended, better brands, etc.)? Is truly enjoying whiskey just a matter of adjusting one's palate to it? Depends on the whisky, but I’d say 7-10 seconds is ideal and then 30 seconds or so for the finish.
Some whisky develop in the mouth a lot past 10 seconds depending on age although usually leaving a dram out to air does the same if you don’t want all that alcohol sitting on the tongue although I usually have very small nips and let it coat my mouth so I’m not blasting myself with too much ethanol influence.
>>11407008
Entirely depends on the bottle and the style, Islay is quite diverse lately in its range of styles.
Bruichladdich single casks are good unpeated rich winey drams with complexity, I have one aged in Rivesaltes fortified wine barriques that’s quite good.
Kilchoman is nice for pure rich distillate character and a good balanced bbq smoke, their Red Wine and Port Cask is quite nice as are their older bourbon single casks.
Bowmore needs cask strength to shine so if you can find a bottle of Devils Cask, Laimrig, Mariner or Tempest around those are worth looking at. If they’re not available don’t bother with them as their current Vault No. 1 cask strength series sucks.
Laphroaig’s 10 cask strength is the go to peated cask dram for me if I’m ever in the USA, it is unbeatable for the price.
Ardbeg Corryvreckan is like a beefed up 10 Year so if you’re in the US and want a big bbq smoke whisky that one is good, not as grain rich as Kilchoman but more umami and salt forward.
For Lagavulin their 12 year cask strength is quite nice, very well rounded mix of cereal, salty smoke and fruit.
Bunnahabhain sherried Cask Strength and their Moine line are fantastic, especially the Moine Bordeaux Cask.
Caol Ila has some good older casks but for value their Unpeated special releases are awesome mixes of cereal, woodsmoke and fresh citrus and temperate fruits.

Regardless of distillery you won’t be dissatisfied with any of the above I think.

Lagavulin 16 for me is the perfectly balanced Islay

If you want a whisky that will punch you in the face and grab you by the balls, go for a laphroaig quarter cask, cask strength or triple wood

Bowmore is also good if you want a smoother islay without so much punch. Still has some smooth sweet notes in there.

Ardbeg has that real salty peat flavour if you're into that.

Really depends on your preference, you cant go wrong with an islay single malt

There are many different types of whisky and many of them are nothing alike. Thats why there is not really any "bad" whiskies. Cheaper whiskies sometimes dont taste as full or bold, and they dont have very long finishes. Some people prefer this though I guess. It's best to expirament a bit a see what flavors you like.

For me personally I got into whisky with blended scotches like Johnnie Walker black label or Chivas regal 12yo. I would recommend any of those two to get started.

Some other great starter scotches are Monkey Shoulder blended scotch or Glenlivet 12.

I can only really recommend scotches as I really dont drink bourbon. Hope that helps you get into it !

You will probably find a lot of really positive reviews for the Glendronach 15. Although go careful with it. The old version, (pre 2015) is probably one of the best whiskeys ive ever tasted and very highly rated by most. Its very difficult to find now. Normally have to go through auction. They have just rereleased it after it being unavailable for a few years and early reviews suggest that it isn't as good as the previous version.

Now that the a'Bunadh is so expensive might be worth looking around for something else.

My favorite is Knob Creek especially the smoked maple kind. Sadly it is quite expensive for me and I tend to drink alcohol too fast when it is in my place.

When I am on a budget, I usually buy a couple of shot bottles of Jack Daniel's or Jameson. I say shot bottles since buying a regular bottle or pint will lead to it getting finish within two days leaving me nonfunctional to do anything productive.

Wild Turkey is better
Hennessy is fine, almost all VSOP from the big 4 taste good
Grey Goose is wildly overpriced, get a stolichnaya instead

>First real whiskey I tried (not bourbon) was Laphroig
>Hated it
>Start with minimally peat flavored whiskey
>Slowly enjoying the peat flavor more and more
Lagavulin or The Balvenie are probably my favorite currently but every time I go to my whiskey bar I ask for something with more peat
