They are all either:

This, and on top of it, their prices have gone through the roof.
I realized this around 2011 or so, I had some friends over, and picked up KFC on my way back.
Everybody had a little bit of sides, everybody got a biscuit and a piece or two of chicken, and then when everybody went for seconds.. we were out. Between four people we finished off a bucket of chicken and some sides instantly. Fifty fucking dollars.

The only KFC nearby is entirely staffed by nogs. I walked inside 3 years ago and it was the nastiest restaurant I've ever been inside of. As soon as I opened the door I was greeted with an immense rotten odor emanating throughout. There was garbage on the floor in front of the counter and on/under tables. The trash cans in the lobby were overflowing and had flies around them. The drink station was in complete disarray and coated with congealed soda. The kitchen area was visibly caked in grease and also had trash strewn about. They had the chicken buckets sitting on a prep table right next to an overflowing trash can with chicken bones peaking out the top. Their sink was completely filled with extraneous cooking instruments that looked like they hadn't been washed in weeks. One of the workers was picking at her weave with her 3" long fingernails. It was revolting, I'd hate to see their bathrooms. I saw that they had a 93 health rating before I walked out. I've worked in a couple of restaurants here so I know that the health inspectors were giving them a pass because they are all nogs as well. I sent an email to KFC corporate and the only reply I got back was "we'll look into it". I looked at online reviews that told much of the same story. I talked to a coworker a year or so ago that thought they had gotten salmonella poisoning from going through that KFC's drive-thru, but had already disposed of their reciept/food and had called the store to complain afterwards. The manager brushed them off and hung up. Amazingly they're still in business.
The only fried chicken joint I bother with is a Popeye's that's 30 minutes away, because it's much cleaner and I've never had any issues with the staff.

The world changed and KFC didn't.
They were competitive back when the only alternative was McDonalds, because sometimes you get tired of McDonalds. But they never had anything else going for them apart from the potato and gravy.
Also there's something fucking wrong with their oil. Not that it dictates my self-destructive fast food decisions, nor does it inform any of the other fatties who keep these kinds of restaurants afloat, but when I eat KFC I get this strange unsettling feeling which I can only put down to the oil. It's like they're frying the chicken in liquid regret.

That being said, when I lived in asia for a few years it was always a really nice change to find a KFC. They were ironically cleaner, newer, and better-maintained than the Western equivalents, and even had a few unique menu options like Portuguese egg tarts. They'd also often make things a lot spicier, which was a novelty.
All of which backs up my theory that KFC only has value when you have few other options, since it was that or Chinese Chinese food..

I worked at bojangles for a very brief period between actual jobs. I was in a nice town, all white people working there and we still were told not to change our chicken out when we were supposed to, so just a heads up. It's also overpriced as fuck and everything other than the chicken and biscuits is prepackaged slop. The most annoying part was idiots thinking their chicken was raw because of the seasoning, but Bojangles itself lost me as a customer for anything other than their sausage/egg/cheese biscuit when they got rid of the cajun wrap.

Used to be good. In the span of even the last ten years you could tell the difference. First they stopped hiring decent employees, it's all nogs and drop outs now. This effects the service dramatically. Las time I went there I asked for a honey heat sandwich with no pickles. Heard chuckling over the mic and they asked me to repeat. Got my sandwich and it had extra pickles and it looked like they dabbed the very corner of the chicken in the sauce and nothing else. The people who work there are immature fuckwads who throw shade at anyone for any reason. Customer service is a myth there. One time I went there and the manager was in the back screaming over her phone about drama on Facebook.

The menu also got gimped hard over the market crash and never recovered. They got rid of all the shit people liked and kept the bare essentials but with much less quality. They started trying to appeal to millennials with no money with their cheap as fuck quality 5 dollar boxes and the sales model hasn't changed since.

Cheaper workers, cheaper products, cheaper marketing, cheaper costumer service and cheaper menu selection all while boosting your prices through the roof. It all comes back to bite you in the ass. Meanwhile every other fast food branch out there is trying to bend over backwards to do the exact opposite. KFC has no excuses, they're just lazy just like the people they hire.

Nah, there's way more KFCs. IIRC they started there earlier and I'm pretty sure they're the most numerous fast food chain in China.

There's plenty of McDonalds in Beijing and Shanghai etc but they drop off as soon as you get more remote (meanwhile KFC is everywhere).

PS since I know anon is wondering: McDonalds is even less different. They have taro pies but I think that's it, unless they've added more Chinese stuff to the menu in the last couple of years. They're also pretty universally consistent, while no two KFCs mix the potatoes or the spicy coatings the same way.

McDonalds are pretty much everywhere too, you'll easily find one somewhere in tier 3-4 cities.
I couldn't say which was actually first in China but they've both been here over 20 years now and their numbers seem about the same to me.

KFC has more competition from Dico's which are an ok-ish rip-off of KFC but has dishes which are sort of more Chinese, quite a few Chinese prefer them to KFC.

One thing I hate about KFC is that their five buck lunches come with a cookie for some reason. I'm not too fond of them and if I'm at KFC I want savory not sweet. I have to ask to replace it with an extra biscuit and it's totally up to the individual restaurant if they'll let you. They also usually tell you that it already comes with a biscuit for some reason as if they don't understand that a person just doesn't want dessert with lunch and it's just that a person would be mad to not get a biscuit or something. I'm replacing something, if I wanted both I'd say add.

In addition if I'm ever tired of the mashed potatoes and try getting another side they always give you those tiny portions that makes it not worth it.

Is there a fast food place that sells a relatively healthy/home cooked vibe meals? Portion of whole chicken pieces, a carb, and veggies. Because I'd love if KFC just let you order meals of chicken, green beans and a biscuit or two but I don't see that happening.

That's the point. Taco Bell's the kind of place that will spend millions researching, filming, and distributing an illuminati commercial for some damned fried potatoes. Also, you are going to pick something else up unless you're just hungry for a small handful of fries (which you're completely allowed to do. Maybe 1/5 people just want the fries). The nacho fry box comes with two tacos, a burrito, fries and a drink for $5, so they can sell 5 items instead of 1 and pay for that sweet marketing.

When it came back this summer it was inflated from $1 to $1.50, because people loved it and are willing to pay more.

Keep in mind they're a bitch to make, cook four minutes, one minute to drain, shaken in a seasoning, put in a carton (no fry scoops here: just employees cursing that the wad of fries won't go in the carton with their fat fingers, and in the daytime or when corporate is around you have to use stupid tongs which make the job 10x more difficult), pump out some cheese, and done. As opposed to making a taco, which takes thirty seconds at most. Labor is very important at Taco Bell, as they're generally making cents to a couple dollars tops on each customer. You're taught techniques on how to fill 12 tacos at a time with lettuce, how to address customers to keep the times down, and if some bitch comes throws a fit, you apologize, replace their item ($10 rule on customer satisfaction) and go back to work, because the taco you gave them costs less than what you'd be paid to deal with them and retain the product. It costs 10c to request an item grilled, because it holds up the line for almost half a minute. It just doesn't make sense to have these fries all the time, they are barely worth the cost, and every time they're out, the whole line has to wait 5 minutes, especially if they've all ordered nacho fries.For a place with perennial success like taco bell, you don't just 'give out' your best stuff. You keep it as a marketing tool.

The only KFC nearby is entirely staffed by niggers. I walked inside 3 years ago and it was the nastiest restaurant I've ever been inside of. As soon as I opened the door I was greeted with an immense rotten odor emanating throughout. There was garbage on the floor in front of the counter and on/under tables. The trash cans in the lobby were overflowing and had flies around them. The drink station was in complete disarray and coated with congealed soda. The kitchen area was visibly caked in grease and also had trash strewn about. They had the chicken buckets sitting on a prep table right next to an overflowing trash can with chicken bones peaking out the top. Their sink was completely filled with extraneous cooking instruments that looked like they hadn't been washed in weeks. One of the nigress workers was picking at her weave with her 3" long fingernails. It was revolting, I'd hate to see their bathrooms. I saw that they had a 93 health rating before I walked out. I've worked in a couple of restaurants here so I know that the health inspectors were giving them a pass because they are all niggers as well. I sent an email to KFC corporate and the only reply I got back was "we'll look into it". I looked at online reviews that told much of the same story. I talked to a coworker a year or so ago that thought they had gotten salmonella poisoning from going through that KFC's drive-thru, but had already disposed of their reciept/food and had called the store to complain afterwards. The manager brushed them off and hung up. Amazingly they're still in business.
The only fried chicken joint I bother with is a Popeye's that's 30 minutes away, because it's much cleaner and I've never had any issues with the staff.

For me, its a combo of things:
