It's not even an edible garnish which is the saddest part. For every one bay leaf the recipe calls for, I add about four or five make sure it's added as early as it can be, and then fish them out after the soup or sauce done cooking.

A lot of people buy old as fuck spices and wonder why they don't do anything. Bay leaves are a particularly bad offender.

Or they'll a single old bay leaf in with 8 other herbs or spices and wonder why they don't taste anything.

not just inedible, actually dangerous if you swallow it

bay leaves are sharp and can poke through stomach linings

>> No.11333086

Take two glasses of warm water
Put a bay leaf in one and wait for a couple of minutes
Taste both glasses of water
Youll notice a difference in the bay leaf one

It's not a conspiracy or whatever it does have taste, I do agree that a single bay leaf in a huge pot of soup or chili doesn't really affect the flavor, you need to add more

It's simply called "laurierdrop" here (laurier meaning bayleaf), but there's quite a few kinds. The original italian ones (pic related) I like the least, they're really strong. But the coin shaped ones, or the ones I posted above are really good.
Then again licorice is the dutch marmite, an bit of an acquired taste I guess.

Only if you're a pussy. Strong salmiak is the best, but regular licorice is fine too as long as it's of great quality.
