Rate today's buy

Drank the first three glasses with only a few drops of water. Still hard to develop a palette for this stuff. Everyone talks about all the different flavors and I'm like "hmm, vanilla"

On the fourth glass now and decided to add two small pieces of ice instead. Immediately much more refreshing obviously, but I also taste more flavors. I get the raisin taste with ice.

I think it'll take some time to really be able to appreciate room temperature scotch neat or with water.

Next month, I'm getting Ardbeg, Laphroaig or Talisker. Not sure which one.

not like there's anything wrong with enjoying whiskey rocks more than neat
it also depends on the whisky, as a rule of thumb I dilute whisky more alcoholic than 46%ABV, I have a friend who regularly buys €40 and up bottles of whisky and I've never seen him drink it without ice
you also might try a glass of (chilled) water next to the undiluted whisky, alternating the two
>>11318681
not having ever tried it I'll recommend the Nikka coffee grain whisky
even the cheaper Nikka from the barrel (not very good if you drink it neat but the best whisky you can use for an old fashioned imo) tasted kind of like your checklist
definitely dark chocolate, definitely dried plum, honey, vanilla, maybe a bit of cherry
so I can only imagine their coffee grain whisky being similar enough and more like coffee, with everything else associated more with grain whisky
in any case I'd go Japanese for something with chocolate and dried fruit
also, knowing which whiskies you've tried and liked or disliked would be helpful to advise you

The only Jap whisky available in Western markets thats worth the money is Nikka From The Barrel and its likely that we'll get it eventually as Pure Malt still sells. The last Jap whisky that came out, Golden Horse, is nowhere worth the money and there's a new one coming in 2 weeks that isn't worth it either although that one is at least 100% Jap whisky while Golden Horse is mostly grain mixed with Scottish malt..
If you want good LCBO whisky coming out soon get the Deanston 2008 Bordeaux Cask, Lot 40 Cask Strength and maybe the Glendronach Cask Strength. In terms of stuff thats currently available if you want sherry look for Glen Garioch 1999 or Tamdhu Batch Strength, both are massive sherrybombs and are good value.

>I really don't get the stigma around blended whisky
What is there to get? The whisky hobby attracts garbage people, the kinds of people who autistically pick the tomato slice off their hamburgers because "I don't like the texture ok? leave me alone"

They heard whisky was "fancy" so they memorized about the islay and the peat and the casks and all that shit. It becomes a consumption ritual, they are sophisticated people because they know brands of bottled mass produced liquor and angrily enforce the consumption rituals they read on about.com or some such thing.

One of the ways they remind themselves that they are real patricians now is by having an enemy within their hobby, and one such enemy is blends. Another is people who "waste" the rare, obscure, extremely artistic liquor, by putting it in cocktails. Because there aren't oceans of this stuff washing up in literally every liquor store around the world, nah some old Scottish man personally made that bottle for Neckbeard McGee and will get upset if one drop goes into a Rob Roy.

"Whisky nerds" are worse than craft beer nerds and "knife guys" and video game autists combined.

Yes they both have similar salty and white pepper notes while keeping temperate fruits as the focal point along with basic vanilla and toffee from the oak. Only difference is that Springbank 10 has a coastal peat that some may like but if your okay with Talisker the Springbank peat should be fine to deal with. Ive reviewed them all extensively and generally found them to be similar in some respects and easy to change within to branch out your preferences.
Also Springbank is one of the best distilleries in Scotland quality wise, their Local Barley cask strengths are fucking cash money.

>a bottle of Yamazaki 12 can be had for some €120 to €130
And would you buy it for that much when you can get far better cask strength scotch? I certainly wouldn't.
Also the USA release of Nikka is 750ml.

Compass Box make some good blends. Try No Name and Flaming Heart if you get a chance to.

Angels Envy is not worth the money, don't both with it. I've had many port cask bourbon and all of them are generally bad. If you want port try Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban or if you can find it Benriach Solstice.

Oh wait, you can buy it in South Carolina, directly across the border, at the Carolinas' highest-selection-of-scotch independent liquor store. Like fifteen minutes from me. 200+ single malts.

I can't remember the last time I felt so excited to go to sleep and get back up in the morning

They don't make it anymore and haven't for years. They don't make hibiki 17 anymore but they still have some barrels (or not who knows) in Japan. Once existing 17 year old stock dry's up they'll never make hibiki 17 again.
You're stuck with non age statement whisky, which I detest in principal.

thanks again, but what I meant was, since Talisker and Oban are a fair bit different, would you say that those two whiskys you suggested (which seem to be fairly different from each other as well, and you say they're similar "in some respect"), would you say that they're a good alternative (as in, they're kind of like) to Talisker, or they're a good alternative to Oban?

>why would you buy nip whisky for that money when you could have something better
because, in my opinion, if you like nip whisky you can't have anything better for that price
>$60 for .75l nikka
>$70 for Talisker 10
what a hard life Americans have
>cask strength this cask strength that
is it a convenience thing because you're getting more alcohol per liter, because it sounds cooler, because you prefer 55%ABV drinks to 40%ABV ones...?

also I still don't get where you're finding the higher complexity on the palate in the Nikka compared to the Talisker

Springbank would be a good alternative to Oban and Clynelish to Talisker although Clynelish is a tad less peaty then Talisker so a similar peated island malt would be Ledaig if you want more smoke.

If you can’t have any better Japanese whisky for over 100 euros then what’s the point? Heck if you really want to invest in good Japanese whisky you’d be better off looking into Chichibu and Karuizawa anyway.
The reason I prefer cask strength is because it’s unfiltered and the qualities of oiliness and other esters coming from the copper still during maturation are generally lost from dilution and chill filtering. This along with the higher proof I think shows the character of the spirit better then something at 43%.
Also for the quality that comes with cask strength it’s a good bang for buck. If you ever get a chance try and compare Laphroaig 10 with Laphroaig 10 Cask Strength and you’ll get an idea of the nuances between the finishing processes.
