There have always been warnings with alcohol even thousands of years ago, it was NEVER viewed in a 100% positive light. Most cultures would view it as something that can make people happy for a while and be used for celebrations and festivals, but that it can also make you stupid and cause problems. And even in cultures that allowed alcohol, they would still usually say it's probably better if you don't drink anyway if you can resist the temptation.
