The only thing I've found this to be true for is ricotta cheese. It actually got moldy on the bottom within 3 days, although another time it was okay after the 5th day. I find pretty much everything else is okay for up to a week, sometimes even longer. Except raw meat too, that should be used within 3 days for whole cuts and preferrably within 1 day for ground meats.

The taste usually already changes after 24 hours due to oxidation, after 3 days it starts to rot. Swine won't care though.

Yogurt and anything else fermented is going to last longer than what the dates say since fermentation is a method of food preservation. I've had yogurt months past the best by date that was still perfectly fine. Won't work the same way for fresh milk though.
