How do I into cooking? We're talking, "parents try using a computer for the first time" entry level shit. It's easy enough to follow recepies and instructions but that's all I can manage. I'm a single 25 year old dude and I just want the knowledge to make tasty stuff.

Read this book. Do what it says.

Or, if you prefer to be spoonfed, go watch "Good Eats" with Alton Brown.

I can't think of any better advice for noobs.

stop thinking it's fucking magic and do what the recipes tell you to do

>> No.11310961

Keep following recipes. You'll pick up skills if you repeat that enough.

Good enough of a start for me. What stumps me are some of the seemingly basic things. Like using metal spatulas on non stick pans. I see similar post like that and have to fucking google why it's bad and feel completely retarded.

Non stick pans are a stupid meme. 99% of all kitchen gadgets invented in the 20th century are complete memes.

That's just common sense and basic physics.
Hard stuff wins against less hard stuff.

You have no idea of my incompetence, anon. For example I would have to look up how to properly treat and clean a cast iron skillet. How I've managed to survive this long is a mystery.

i think it helps a lot to own one totally idiot-proof pan, like an enamel-covered dutch oven with an iron core and high sides. this can be used for saute, roast, braise, smother, if it's a big one i'm sure you could make pancakes in it. new ones are expensive but you see old ones all the time at flea markets

>enamel-covered dutch oven with an iron core and high sides
This seems like an oddly specific item. Am I being jested?

Most of caring for cast iron is just wiping it out when you're done and using a metal spatula to scrape off any carbon deposits. They all come pre seasoned. Some autists will complain that it isn't an ideal seasoning from the factory but you shouldn't have any problems. Cast iron is also basically indestructible and cheap. There are draw backs and thinner gauge carbon steel or copper can be better for certain applications but you as a beginner are not likely to run into that issue.
>>11311053
Not really very common and very classic utensil.

>> No.11311097

>>11311053
i was also trying to idiot-proof my suggestion since people mistake casserole dishes for proper dutch ovens all the time. if you try to saute with a casserole dish it will probably shatter

i think an iron pan is good enough for a beginner but you specifically complained about seasoning it. the truth is seasoning is a non-issue unless you do something stupid like leave water in it until it rusts. the enamel layer on an iron-core dutch oven is like a permanent seasoning

It's the not using soap bit that messes with me. Just a wipe and a scrap doesn't register as clean for me.

How bout this fun fact. Your pan is raised to temperatures that dwarf pasteurization temps and the whole purpose of cooking food over direct heat in the first place is that it annihilates foodborne pathogens. Your pan is sterilized every time you cook with it.

You just keep following the recipes and you will eventually learn techniques from that.
That's all it is, techniques and experience.
