I'm entirely new to rum, and I'd like to try it. As a beginning, I'd like to try something that's suitable for sipping as well as mixing, and having read up on the topic a bit, it seems dark rums are the most preferred kind for this purpose, but being the noob that I am, I am open to anything. What brands should I look into that could serve as a good introduction and does not require breaking the bank?

Also, I'm from Europe, so the selection seems really limited and the prices high.

Jamaican rums tend to mix well. Appleton is a good introduction to Jamaican rums, but if you're feeling more adventurous, maybe try Smith and Cross, because it's funky and distinctive enough to balance out other strong flavors in a drink. That one's definitely not for sipping tho.
You might also try a demerara rum like Hamilton or El Dorado. They tend to taste strong and spicy (and sometimes even a bit smoky), but with a lot of brown-sugar sweetness too. Great for mixing or sipping.

That rum is no good but I have to say that is a neat looking bottle.

Thanks really much for the recommendations, guys! Most of these are available online here, I'll be looking around in my hometown to see if I can buy something locally

Get the cheapest shit you can find and accept you're going to have a headache the next day.

What sort of cocktails were you planning on mixing? I'm fond of Goslings black seal for anything I make. It's pretty good for sipping too and is relatively cheap

Mount Gay is the best of the standard rums (<£20 a bottle).

I'm usually more of a whiskey drinker, so Rhum Barbancourt was very much up my alley. Could be worth trying.

Those two attributes tend to go together until you hit hundreds of dollars (or more) per bottle.

Spiced rum is a very good all-around after dinner drink. Neat, especially. Avoid the cheap shit laced with vanilla only, and look for Don Q.

Yes, I know spiced rum is like training wheels for the beginning alcoholic, but a high-quality one, unmixed, can be very good.

Good choice. Not to sound like a shill, but if you like the spiced, try Don Q. It's quite good.
