Something that doesn't stink up the whole carriage.

Ideally a salad that you packed before, eaten from tupperware with a fork you brought from home wrapped in a paper kitchen towel.

Some trains stop at the train station.
You could also get off the train at say Water Orton station for example and watch the trains from the bridge AFTER visiting the Water Orton Fish Bar.

I'm a conductor and I hate when people eat on my trains. They always spill shit everywhere, making the other passengers complain to ME about dirty tables and floors. Also I always ask people with smelly food to please fuck off and not eat stinky shit on my trains.

When I'm a passenger, I always eat an open faced shrimp sandwich with eggs, mayonnaise, lettuce and dill. I also drink a small bottle of chilled white wine, or a lager.

Rail is way comfier and more scenic, if you have the time. I always would choose rail when heading to the west coast to see family in Washington state. You should definitely add taking a sleeper car over the rocky mountains to your bucket list.

If you're gunna be on a train in Japan for 9 hours you're gunna be on a normal commuter train, so you wont have shit like a bento cart, vending machines or smoking rooms.
If you want the good shit, ride a bullet train. It's a bit more expensive than flying domestic but is way quicker and less bullshit, plus way more legroom.
