I agree, there are no hard rules about this sort of thing. And also, you need to test the waters yourself to calibrate your behavior, and sometimes you will do things that cross the line, and you shouldn't be ashamed of this (obviously don't assault anyone).

E.g. I went on a few dates with a girl at work who was very friendly, but I only asked her out after she recognized me at the water cooler a few months later. Maybe I should have asked her out at the time, but that also might have made her uncomfortable in front of her coworkers so maybe I made the right call?
