So I'm making my own vodka. Here's the progress. I have 2 sugar washes, and I'll go into detail for each one, and then I have one peach vodka that tastes fucking horrific. Constructive criticism is very welcome, because as it turns out, it's harder than I though to make a good vodka.

I very briefly made a google search a few months ago on making your own homemade vodka and everyone seemed to recommend to start with wine or beer since vodka is a complicated process and requires some extra tools

Is this true?

I’ve been thinking about trying to brew some my own as a little hobby but figured it was too much work as most things in my life

You just need to know your temperatures and maybe have a hydrometer to tell how much alcohol you have. The hardest step is distilling, but it's honestly not difficult and you can have decent stuff in like 4 days

Basically, just make your mash/sugar wash, leave it at a reasonable temp until it stops bubbling, then filter it and distill what you've got. These are my current batches and I'm running into some issues distilling them because plastic wrap isn't great, but I'll get an done. Generally takes a long fucking time unless you have legit instruments, but it's still not hard

he's still separating alcohols from the wash, even if he's not separating the methanol from the ethanol
look carefully at >>11177925, you can see some kind of reservoir in the middle which is catching the condensed alcohol as it drips down

again, it's extremely crude, but it's literally the technical definition of distillation

If you look even closer, you can see I actually have some decent control of the temperatures, and because methanol evaporates at about 150 and ethanol closer to 170, I can do a decent job of distilling it. Obviously it's still pretty crude and I'm definitely still getting some methanol but I doubt it's even 10% alcohol of any kind so the risk is minimal

Unfortunately though I can't be 100% on my temperatures cause I have a layer of glass and metal before the liquid, but I just make sure to leave itt directly in the pan for about 0 minutes at like 170 to make sure I'm good. I lose some ethanol in the process, but the methanol goes first so I figure it's worth it

It's honestly been a lot more successful than I thought it would be out here. It takes a fuckin long time to actually distill it, but when it's done, I'm left with some pretty strong stuff. The only issue is the unknown amounts of methanol I'm ingesting, but I've had a lot over the past week and so far so good
