>In a city where rents have never been higher, groceries also cost huge chunks of money. As long you can buy five dumplings in Chinatown for $1.25 — forever, I hope — it’s never going to be purely economical to cook at home.

>And what kind of monster wants to turn on an oven in August, anyway? That wheezing window air-conditioner can only do so much. Did your landlord find your grill on the fire escape and confiscate it, your only way to cook without melting in your apartment?

>Cooking, especially a new dish, is a huge gamble. Did the recipe author forget that you don’t have line cooks doing your prep? Was the ninth ingredient in that recipe a confit you were supposed to have made weeks ago? Do they chide you for not using the “best” butter? So many potential pitfalls, all of which could be avoided by not participating.

>Even good recipes lie. The yields are often bananas. The cooking times are always dubious, too. A “20-minute recipe” seems to take me, on average, about 75 minutes.

It's true. Those recipe times are just cook times. It still takes time to prep your ingredients, wash off something before using it again usually, not everything is all ready to go in little glass cups for you to reach over and grab, "it's so easy" when you have the ADs working to measure ingredients and all you have to do is pour them in at the right time.
Then there's the dishes afterwards.

I guess it could, if you are an inept fuck who was not taught basic life skills by your parents and are too stupid to research them on your own.

and hell, you don't even have to reheat the leftovers, you can re-purpose them in other dishes. Chop up some leftover meat and use it to dress a salad. Pretty much anything can go in a sandwich or wrapped up in tortilla/pita/etc. Lots of things can be added to soups or stews, etc. This is just lack of standard life skills.

Meanwhile our neighbor has the typical "housewife" that sells essential oils, is "overwhelmed" by all the housework, and constantly complains about having no time, despite only having one kid. I'm fine with jokes about people's ethnicities. However, there's a point when jokes turn into outright racism, which again is fine. If people ant to be dicks, they'll be dicks.

But for a major newspaper which professes to be liberal and against racism to employ an racist and do so proudly, claiming the reason why she was hired was because of her racism makes me question the newspaper.

Especially when they also claim that doing so about other races is bad and would scream and go into a frenzy if anyone said the same things about anyone other than white ethnicities (of which there are a diverse and numerous collection). Hypocrisy matters.

honestly the closest thing i can think of to what you're implying is some dude getting fired for being spotted at that charlottesville rally. show me someone making remarks similar to sarah jeong getting fired please. not that she got fired, mind you.

also you're saying "deal with what you dish out", but there was no "dealing" or "dishing out" in sarah jeong's case she, wasn't fired. don't you think the fair thing would be for both of these types of people to be fired? sarah jeong wasn't fired. why does she deserve to keep her job while conservatives don't? shouldn't that make your injustice sense tingle?

maybe you don't think anybody should be fired over twitter comments and remarks? so is the way to do it to just not cause a stink over it and continue with the status quo with normie conservatives getting fired and leftists shitting on white people keeping their job. great plan my dude.

there's very few cases in which it's more cost efficient to go out to eat. those five dumplings for $1.25 probably cost that chink 25 cents to make.

Are you stupid or just uneducated? Tons of people get in trouble for /pol/ garbage. Pewdiepie got his show cancelled for saying nigger and paying some Indians to hold up a sign calling for death to all Jews, Jontron got patched out of the game he voiced a character for after ranting about black crime statistics, and those are only e-celebs. Roseanne Bar got fired for tweeting that a black politician was offspring of the Muslim brotherhood and Planet of the apes. People cried and cried about the injustice of this and how it was just joking.

The tweets that hurt your feelings so very much were made four years ago while the woman in question was weathering a storm of racist abuse for writing about internet-harassment. If you want to tar and feather her (again, whining about it on the internet will not help) then there's going to be plenty of people on the right-wing side who you'd have to hold to those standards as well.

that being said, i do agree there's a double standard when it comes to white people and it's a little annoying when i've done nothing but support these people and argue against racial bias and then everyone turns around and makes gigantic sweeping statements about white people as if it somehow isn't racism too.
it's either ignorant to judge someone based on their skin color, or it's not. it's not "well it's ignorant to have a bias against blacks because theyre black but if you have a bias against white people for being white that's fine". either we all call each other nigger spic cracker and kike or none of us call any of us any of it.

you're right on the money about roseanne barr though. she did get fired and people did screech about it. yeah, personally i don't think it's worth a firing, but it doesn't surprise me. i fully expected that to happen.

here's the rub though, sarah jeong did NOT get fired. you tried to imply there was some kind of hypocrisy. because conservatives feigned outrage over getting fired over tweets and then they wanted that same standard to be applied to sarah jeong. but sarah jeong didn't get fired. there were no consequences for her. so you can't really equate the two can you?

>the woman in question was weathering a storm of racist abuse for writing about internet-harassment
yeah and i assume if someone was trolling me on twitter and i shot back with "niggers are disgusting apes who smell like shit", you'd be on my side too, right?

no you fucking wouldn't, because you're a liberal yourself. you started pretending you were some casual observer, but the fact that you defend these tweets shows you're a pathetic coward who didn't want to reveal his true views and just wanted to hide behind some fake neutral veneer.

you're just a faggot who hates the idea of your own standards being applied to your side. you literally believe a conservative deserves to be fired over a tweet, but a liberal doesn't. anybody with a shred of integrity would at the least condemn both people or say that neither should have been fired. but you're not that kind of person, so you can fuck off

I found an alright 1.25 dumpling shop in downtown brooklyn that also does pork buns but it's not as good as chinatown dumplings

Even if this was true in USA it wouldn't be in rest of the world
Let's say i buy fried rice as a takeaway from local chinese restaurant, that's 8€.
Now let's get the ingredients to make fried rice at home:
>jasmine rice 1kg 2€
>rapeseed oil 1L 1,5€
>carrot bag 1kg 1€
>frozen pea bag 200g 0,6€
>light soy sauce 500ml 2,2€
>salt 1kg 0,8€
>sugar 1kg 1,0€
>MSG 150g 1,50€
>garlic, three heads 1€
>10 eggs, 1,3€
>possible meat, pork neck 400g 3€
And there you have it, with these prices i can cook far more food for myself than even if i'd have bought two fried rice meals. Also these ingredients last fairly long, the rice, peas, eggs and meat the only thing i have to regularly restock.

i know and i'm sorry anon, but just, ask you thoses questions, rent is high as fuck even for restaurant, labour cost money ( exept if you use illegal alien slave or your own family which can be both) basic ingredient are pricy all hell ( if i believe this woman, whom for the sake of convinience i will do so ) following basic hygiene requirement cost money, how can you make profit selling 5 dumpling for less than 2 bucks ?

by the way, how big are those dumpling and how many of those do you need to not starve , because 5 dumpling for a meal seems pretty light meal even for my food disordered ass.

Not the anon you're replying to, but saying that a race shouldn't breed, and that you go out of your way to be cruel to old people of said race is being straight up racist, and shouldn't be able to advertise said racism on their twitter and not be reprimanded. It sets a terrible precedence, and is terribly hypocritic of The Times. Racism is racism no matter who is saying it.

Honestly, this is just showing how immature she is if she thinks replying in kind is the proper way to reply to people. And on top of that, she said generalized statements, not direct statements, so no, even with this in mind, her tweets are still racist as hell. She didn't say I like tormenting old white people like you, she said she just likes tormenting old white people.

Racist just means the left doesn't like it and it has something to do with race. Sexist just means the left doesn't like it and it has something to do with gender. The right is never going to subvert these words to use against them because those are the actual definitions.

All of the bullet points in this just show that this person doesn't believe that cooking is a learned skill, but rather that you should just be able to look at instructions once and be able to do it. Obviously a lot of the free recipes need tweaking. They're posted by some random person on the internet. And ontop of that, if you've tried just a few different online recipes, you learn very quickly to just go ahead and prep all of your shit beforehand instead of doing it between things. It's hard to prep food between cooking other things, that take's practice with each individual recipe.
Also why would you buy the expensive version of ingredients your first time cooking anything like it.

I'm glad I don't live in a high priced shithole. I can make a huge amount of them for only around $5. Enough to have meals for all week.

>dumplings

What? You steam, fry, or boil dumplings and you can do that on a BBQ grill or other outdoor side outside.

I did it once with spaghetti sauce when I was like 13. At the time I thought I burnt the garlic and that's what made it bad but I can't actually be sure/I don't remember much else.

It was horrible though, I ended up dumping it in the trash and to this day I don't saute garlic long at all. It goes in after the veggies have cooked down, and almost immediately I either take it off the heat or dump in whatever liquid will be cooked in (usually diced tomatoes as I'm poor fag living off pasta)
