Two things really:
1) it's flavorless.
2) it's raised in horrid conditions. the standard practice in Asia is to put chicken cages above the tiliapia ponds, and the fish feed on the chicken shit. No really, google it.

The reason why Tilapia are cheap to farm is because they do well in low-oxygen conditions. In other words, it lets the farmers cram a fuckload of fish into a very small amount of space. Of course that causes disease problems, but that's nothing that a little heavy metal can't sort out (copper is a common antimicrobial, and yes it's toxic to humans).

White people got tricked into thinking it was some kind of exotic gourmet food and paying $9/lb for it at a time when even good fish was like $10/lb, so shitty aquaculture operations popped up everywhere, it became the hottest get rich quick scheme in every podunk town in Asia. Yes and no. Tilapia was never a rich man's food in Asia but even "good" tilapia isn't that expensive in Asia, the difference is Americans don't know any better and will literally eat anything if you tell them it's healthy.

That's what I was told, but then I went there and perfectly decent restaurants have it, and "rich" people seem to order and enjoy it. Then again maybe my definition of "poor people" differs, philippine poor is next-level poor, these were restaurants frequented by people who owned iphones and drove newish cars, equivalent to middle class westerners, but "rich" by local standards.
