I really like this stuff, I ate some at one of the places where they make it. If you like cheese with a strong ammonia flavor, you will probably like hákarl.

Here's a honest tasting video without overt acting.

Btw, if you are going to try this, get fillets, not whole fishes. Much more pleasant.

>what is preserving/fermenting
Absolute brainlet, they did it out of necessity, not taste. There were no brunch restaurants in 800AD Norway.

Also Finland isn't part of Scandinavia.
Doesn't your local store sell frozen blood?

Surströmming is actually really nice once you get past the smell, which is honestly exaggerated. It has a very salty, very umami flavor, not fishy at all. Serve it on buttered flatbread with sliced potatoes, onions and maybe some sour cream. Great paired with a pale lager or pilsner, and akvavit or vodka for sipping in between bites.

m8 that's not nordic, that's Inuit food. They historically barely had any in the first place, so you kind of make do with what you get.

Surströmming, at least I can pass it as a “cultural experience”. Eating butter for the same reason would be like a tourist wanting to experience Black Friday

>preserving
Why would they need to preserve the entire bird? Why not just put the meat inside the seal skin? Why the fuck do they even need a seal skin at all? Just fucking hang the meat out to dry.
