VB/Norfolk has some high quality seafood spots. Oysters and crab being the main staples. Most places have locally caught fish specials too. One Fish Two Fish and Chick's Oyster Bar being good. Dumar's is good for a classic drive-in experience. Route 58 is a great NY style deli. Brass Bell has the best unheard of divey breakfast in VB.

Central VA, aka Richmond, is a hipster city but has some good places like Can Can Brasserie, Galaxy Diner (get the nuclear waste dog), or Lee's Famous Fried Chicken. Dutch & Co won a bunch of awards but I haven't tried it yet. Bookbinders is great if you want a classic steak and seafood house. Perly's is goat for a classic jewish diner/deli experience.

Can't speak as much for DC unfortunately.

True Virginia aged and smoked country ham, i.e. Smithfield, is legendary, but pricey.

You can prep it by soaking in several changes of water so it doesn't hurt your sensitive, gender neutral tastebuds. Don'f forget, the rough and tumble men and women who tamed this wilderness ate that shit everyday and were strong as oxen. Hell, their 15 yo daughters could have taken you down and crushed you to a whimpering pulp. That was back in the day when we had 4800+ craft breweries in the US, too.

I find that's actually not anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be. I've been buying Benton's hams for years. I guess they are from TN rather than VA, but they are the same product: old-fashioned dry cured ham.

A whole ham from Benton's costs about $75 and weighs roughly 15 lbs. Add $20 for shipping costs and even then your're at $95 for 15 lbs, or roughly $6.34/lb. That's substantially cheaper than Boar's Head.

You don't eat it like a piece of steak, you treat it more like a seasoning. I.e. throw a chunk in with a pot of greens or beans. Saute some in a pot before you make perlou, etc.

VA doesnt have as much as its neighbors unfortunately.

Route 58 is fucking great.
So is Alakaline if you want some Ramen, and Los Cuates Taqueria for some mexican.

Yeah, I don't deny Benton's is a comparable product and far cheaper because Smithfield is selling for $150 for a @ 15lb country ham. But we were talking sbout VA and that's why I quslified it with overly expensive.

Glad to hear somebody else who's tried 58 and enjoyed it. Did you pick up on the less-than-subtle "we want to overfeed you" vibe?

Never tried the other two places you mentioned, but I'll check them out. Thanks
